Pacers Fans Reveal Conversation From Trending Video During Nets Game
A couple went viral recently after the Indiana Pacers' FanDuel Sports Network broadcast spotted a couple having an animated and amicable conversation while they watched their Pacers defeat the host Brooklyn Nets 123-94 on Thursday evening.
The girlfriend featured in the shot, Grace, then chimed in to clear up that all was definitely well (h/t Alex Golden of Pacers on SI).
Now Grace and her boyfriend, Michael, cleared up what they were talking about.
"We were talking about the academic rigor of a liberal arts education, and essentially how it can be updated for the current economic status and job market," Michael told Tom Dierberger of Sports Illustrated.
The conversation stemmed from a topic discussed on the New York Times' "Interesting Times" podcast, which had former Nebraska senator and University of Florida president Ben Sasse on as a guest.
Grace then explained her reaction to Sports Illustrated.
"Even saying that out loud, I can hear you yawning through the phone."
"… The thing is, Michael and I have been together for four years—wonderful, happy years. But that's just what we do. We both just talk. He's frighteningly smart. So what everyone witnessed was me listening to his well-articulated thoughts and responding with what you saw, which was 'What the f--k are you talking about?'
She added: "I think that was probably to kill time while I thought of a rebuttal. Because that's sometimes what you have to do. Sometimes you ad hominem, sometimes you just raise your voice, and other times you actually already have something to say. I think that I did a mix of the two while I sorted out my thoughts. That's just how we always talk, and it's fun, and we're always just doing that. That's it. It's so boring."
As boring as the conversation topic may appear to people, the quick broadcast moment was arguably one of the the most memorable thing to emerge from a game against two tanking NBA teams near the bottom of the league standings. Indiana clobbered Brooklyn in a game that saw the Pacers lead 31-14 after the first quarter and 63-37 at halftime. On the court, Obi Toppin's 26 points and nine rebounds in just 19 minutes off the bench stole the show.
Off the court, though, this interaction got plenty of attention. As of 4 p.m. ET on Saturday, Golden's tweet has 19 million views and 62,000 likes. Grace's response to the tweet has 240,000 likes.
The Pacers' regular season ends on Sunday with a home game vs. the Detroit Pistons.
