'Terrible,' Dan Hurley Rips CBB Transfer Portal, Says Tampering Goes on Entire Season

Andrew PetersApr 9, 2026

Dan Hurley has found success in the NIL era of college basketball, but the UConn head coach still thinks something needs to change regarding the transfer portal.

On the Dan Patrick Show, Hurley called the current state of the transfer portal "terrible," saying teams have to be run like a pro organization.

"This is terrible, what's going on right now," Hurley said (9:30 mark). "I think we all have to get to a point... And it's not terrible in the sense of NIL. I think the NIL, to the players, is awesome... I think, as college programs right now, you literally have to have a front office that takes over at this point in the year... The college programs have got to start being run like an NBA organization."

Hurley also spoke to the uncertainty the transfer portal causes for teams.

"Maybe five? Four or five out of 15, maybe?" Hurley said when asked how many players he'll have returning next year (11:56). "Between turning pro, players having the role they want here, so they test the draft process. Obviously, there's tampering that's been going on. There's tampering the entire year. Even players that aren't in the portal."

Obviously, things have worked out well for Hurley in recent years, having appeared in the national championship game three times in the last four seasons and winning two national titles. Still, one of the most prominent head coaches calling for change indicates that there might be a problem.
