Vitale also let it be known that he feels "fantastic."
This update comes after he revealed last week that he would be undergoing a biopsy.
"While I feel great physically and sharp mentally, I heard from my doctors that the latest tests (which included a PET scan and then a CAT scan and two MRIs) showed some abnormalities," he said in a statement.
"They are recommending some additional testing to determine the next steps. I'm hoping for the best and we will see what the roadmap looks like after an upcoming biopsy."
Vitale added that "I plan to remain as active as ever and fight as hard as can be."
Vitale was forced to temporary leave the broadcast table following the 2022-23 season and returned in February 2025.
Last May, the 86-year-old said he was cancer-free. He and ESPN subsequently agreed to a contract extension through 2027-28.
The Hall of Famer achieved a career first last month when he was on the call for Texas' 68-66 win over North Carolina State in the First Four round of the NCAA tournament. He had never before worked a tourney game for television.
Vitale is a revered figure within college basketball. His infectious excitement comes through every time he puts a headset on, and a lot of his signature catchphrases entered the popular vernacular.
