New Billy Donovan Rumors Reveal Interest Around NBA After Bulls Front-Office Changes
Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan's future with the franchise is unclear after the team fired executive vice president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas and general manager Marc Eversley on Monday.
NBA insider Jake Fischer reported that Donovan "is expected to draw interest from other NBA teams this spring that could try to test Chicago's resolve in terms of keeping him."
The Bulls signed Donovan to a multiyear contract extension last summer and denied the New York Knicks permission to speak to him during their head coaching search after they fired Tom Thibodeau.
At 30-49, Chicago is set to miss the playoffs for the fourth straight year and the fifth time in six years under Donovan. Still, the 60-year-old received a vote of confidence from Bulls CEO and team president Michael Reinsdorf.
"If I interview someone and they're not sold on Billy, they're not sold on a Hall of Fame coach," Reinsdorf told reporters during a video call Tuesday, "they're not sold on a person who's won championships in college, who's gone deep in the playoffs with Oklahoma City. … If Billy wants to be our coach and someone's not interested in that, then they're probably not the right candidate for us."
If Donovan chooses to jump ship as well, it sounds like he could find a new landing spot around the NBA with a team in need of a change in leadership.
