After reportedly agreeing to a deal with the Tar Heels earlier this week, Malone was officially named the team's head coach on Tuesday. ESPN's Pete Thamel reported that Malone agreed to a six-year contract with an average annual value of more than $8.3 million, making him one of the highest-paid coaches in all of college hoops.
Malone, who last coached the Denver Nuggets, will take over after Hubert Davis' firing in March. He's the first coach without UNC ties in 74 years.
Malone hasn't coached at the collegiate level since 2001, when he was an assistant at Manhattan. He was the head coach of the Sacramento Kings from 2013 to 2014 and led the Nuggets from 2015 to 2025.
The 54-year-old Malone won a championship with the Nuggets in 2023, the franchise's first ever, but was fired 79 games into the 2025 season despite the Nuggets making the playoffs.
Before taking the job at North Carolina, Malone reportedly was a top candidate for the New Orleans Pelicans' head coaching vacancy.
Malone will now get a fresh start with the Tar Heels, and he'll look to get the program back on track after Davis' mediocre tenure that ended with a first-round exit.
