LeBron Says 'I Just Happen to Be Really F--king Good' When Explaining How People 'Misjudge' Him

Paul KasabianApr 7, 2026

Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James sat down with Basketball Hall of Famer Steve Nash for the latest episode of the Mind the Game podcast and discussed various topics, including James' adaptability to play different roles on his teams over the years.

In essence, James said he feels people misjudge or discount his ability to be a jack-of-all-trades or Swiss Army knife, adding that he's "really f--king good" at basketball (26:02 mark).

"I think that's one of the things that a lot of people have misjudged about me as a ballplayer is that I can adapt to any role or situation. Or position. I just happen to be really f--king good at this thing. Yeah, like, really, really good. Yeah. Like, really good at it. Yeah. Like, really good at it. So it gets overlooked sometimes."

Those comments were precipitated by Nash asking about five-time All-NBA guard Luka Dončić's arrival to the team in February 2025 and how James has had to adapt.

"Not being an idiot," James said. "Not being an idiot. I'm not an idiot. I'm not an idiot. Like, I understand...first of all, I am well-aware of my game and what I can do for a basketball team. I've never had a position. So I know I have the ability to be put in any position that can fit a team win, even if it's taking away some of the things I've always done."

James later discussed things he has been asked to do over the years. For example, he was the Lakers' de-facto point guard during their 2019-20 championship season, when he led the NBA in assists (10.2 APG). He also spoke about playing in Miami with the Heat, having the ball in his hands less, ceding to Dwyane Wade and slashing from the wing to the basket more often. James also talked about being asked to play center as well.

On the Luka-era Lakers, the 41-year-old James hasn't been asked to score as much with Dončić leading the team offensively. Of course, as Nash noted in the chat, James doesn't need to be an offensive juggernaut to contribute in other ways. For the year, he's averaging 7.1 assists, 6.1 rebounds and 1.1 steals in addition to his 20.8 points per game.

Right now, though, James is being asked to be the clear top option with Dončić (Grade 2 hamstring strain) and Austin Reaves currently out (Grade 2 oblique strain). He enjoyed a great game with 30 points on 12-of-22 shooting alongside 15 assists and nine rebounds on Sunday, but the Lakers fell 134-128 to the Dallas Mavericks.
