Michigan Beats UConn to Win 2026 Men's CBB Title, Fans and Experts Sound Off On NCAA Championship

Scott PolacekApr 6, 2026

The drought is over for Michigan men's basketball and the Big Ten as well.

The Wolverines defeated UConn 69-63 in Monday's national championship game of the 2026 NCAA men's tournament. The victory gave Michigan its first national title since 1989 and the Big Ten its first championship since 2000. It also snapped the conference's eight-game losing streak in men's title games.

As for UConn, it missed an opportunity to establish itself as a modern-day dynasty with what would have been a third national championship in four years and seventh overall.

Morez Johnson Jr. notched a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Elliot Cadeau led the way with 19 points. Double-doubles from Tarris Reed Jr. (13 points and 14 boards) and Alex Karaban (17 points and 11 rebounds) weren't enough for the Huskies.

Social media had no shortage of reaction to the Wolverines' win:

While both teams had injury concerns with Michigan's Yaxel Lendeborg and UConn's Solo Ball playing hurt, the Wolverines still felt like an inevitable champion coming into the contest even with the Huskies' recent history of postseason success.

After all, it won each of its previous tournament games by double digits and has been completely unstoppable throughout the Big Dance.

Yet the Huskies were able to slow things down in the early going and bothered the Wolverines' outside shooters enough to hold the Big Ten representative to 0-of-8 shooting from deep in the first half.

But even that wasn't enough to prevent Michigan from taking a four-point lead into intermission. The foul trouble didn't help, as Tarris Reed Jr., Silas Demary Jr. and Ball each had two fouls at halftime, which prevented the Huskies from playing physical defense down low as the Wolverines seized the advantage following a slow start.

UConn was surely frustrated with the foul difference, but it was also a testament to Michigan's ability to win in multiple ways.

Things didn't change in the second half, as Ball picked up his third and fourth fouls in the opening four minutes after intermission. The lack of foul discipline has been a problem all season for UConn, and Michigan is far too talented of an opponent to be facing when making constant mistakes.

And that talent began to shine through as it extended the lead to double digits with Elliot Cadeau getting into the lane and finally connecting on a three-pointer.

To UConn's credit, its overall toughness and defensive prowess kept it within striking distance for much of the second half. But toughness doesn't make baskets, and the Huskies' own poor shooting prevented them from taking advantage of Michigan's slow stretches.

Every time it seemed like the Big East representative was about to take momentum, Michigan responded with a small spurt to regain control. It didn't even truly matter that Lendeborg was struggling as he played through an injury, as the Wolverines just had more options.

No sequence summed up the game better than UConn failing to score on a breakaway leading to a Trey McKenney three-pointer in the final two minutes. The lead went to nine instead of four because of the five-point swing, which proved critical as the Huskies chipped away near the end in what proved to be a futile effort.

The final result was Michigan triumph, as it put the finishing touches on an incredible season with the sport's most coveted trophy.
