Fresh NBA Rumors Uncover Dusty May Buzz After Michigan HC Withdraws from UNC Search

Timothy RappApr 6, 2026

Michigan men's basketball head coach Dusty May already rebuffed interest from North Carolina and reportedly told school officials he wouldn't consider other college jobs.

But what if the NBA comes calling?

According to The Athletic's Brendan Marks, the Michigan head coach is "expected to receive NBA interest this offseason, according to multiple industry sources, but will not entertain other college jobs."

The 49-year-old May has led the Wolverines to Monday night's national championship game against UConn and a 63-13 overall record in two seasons at Michigan. He previously coached Florida Atlantic for six seasons, going 126-69 with two NCAA tournament appearances and a Final Four berth in 2022-23.

The NBA often comes calling for hot names in the coaching ranks, for better (Billy Donovan, Quin Snyder, Brad Stevens) or worse (Rick Pitino and John Calipari headline this very, very long list).

As for the school May reportedly already spurned, North Carolina reportedly is hiring Sacramento Kings and Denver Nuggets head coach Michael Malone as its new head coach:

Monday's news also seemingly improves the Chicago Bulls' chances of keeping Donovan:

But at least one potential option for NBA teams seeking a new head coach is now off the board. Don't be shocked if May comes up in coaching searches in the coming months.
