Ranking All 30 MLB Teams' Homegrown Talent for 2026 Season

Joel ReuterApr 7, 2026

Whether it's a small-market team pinching pennies or a major-market club with a limitless budget, a good internal talent pipeline is a necessity for building a championship roster.

With that in mind, what follows is a look at how all 30 MLB franchises stack up on homegrown talent. Clubs were initially ranked based on the number of homegrown players on the 40-man roster and then shuffled from there based on the amount of high-level talent in that group.

Before we dive into the rankings, some quick clarification:

Who qualifies as homegrown? To be considered homegrown, a player must have been drafted by an organization or signed by it as an amateur free agent and subsequently developed in its minor league system.

What about international free agents? International players who entered the league with significant professional experience were not included. That means players such as Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Roki Sasaki, Seiya Suzuki, Shota Imanaga, Kodai Senga, Jung Hoo Lee, Masataka Yoshida, Munetaka Murakami, Kazuma Okamoto and Tatsuya Imai did not help their respective team's ranking.

30. Miami Marlins

1 of 30
Colorado Rockies v Miami Marlins
Eury Pérez

40-Man Total: 9

Impact Players
RHP Eury Pérez
RHP Max Meyer

Quick Thoughts: Since they have not had a homegrown All-Star since Trevor Rogers in 2021, it's not surprising that the Marlins are slotted at the bottom of these rankings. That said, Eury Pérez has the talent to break that drought, and he's now another full year removed from Tommy John surgery.

29. Washington Nationals

2 of 30
Los Angeles Dodgers v Washington Nationals
Daylen Lile

40-Man Total: 14

Impact Players
OF Daylen Lile
RHP Cade Cavalli
1B Luis García Jr.
3B Brady House

Quick Thoughts: Since James Wood and CJ Abrams both came from the Padres in the Juan Soto deal, the Nationals are lacking in an established homegrown star. Opening Day starter Cade Cavalli and second-half standout Daylen Lile are both trending toward bigger things, but for now they're still thin.

28. San Diego Padres

3 of 30
San Francisco Giants v San Diego Padres
Jackson Merrill

40-Man Total: 8

Impact Players
OF Jackson Merrill
RP Adrian Morejón

Quick Thoughts: Given the way A.J. Preller churns through prospect talent on the trade market, it's not surprising that very few homegrown players are making an impact. He did make the right call holding onto Jackson Merrill, and it's hard to believe he is still only 22 years old with 280 games and 7.3 WAR already under his belt.

27. Chicago White Sox

4 of 30
Toronto Blue Jays v Chicago White Sox
Colson Montgomery

40-Man Total: 8

Impact Players
SS Colson Montgomery
RHP Sean Burke
RHP Davis Martin
RHP Grant Taylor
IF Lenyn Sosa

Quick Thoughts: The White Sox development team has done a nice job turning Sean Burke (3rd round, 2021 draft) and Davis Martin (14th round, 2018 draft) into rotation pieces, and there is more rising pitching talent in the pipeline. Expect them to steadily climb these rankings as the rebuild continues.

26. Tampa Bay Rays

5 of 30
Tampa Bay Rays v St. Louis Cardinals
Jonathan Aranda

40-Man Total: 8

Impact Players
1B Jonathan Aranda
LHP Shane McClanahan
IF Taylor Walls
OF Chandler Simpson

Quick Thoughts: With their reliance on cost-controlled young talent, it's surprising that the Rays are not higher, but many of their key contributors are guys who were acquired via trade while they were still prospects. Can a healthy Shane McClanahan return to front-line form after missing the entire 2024 and 2025 seasons?

25. Philadelphia Phillies

6 of 30
Texas Rangers v Philadelphia Phillies
Aaron Nola

40-Man Total: 11

Impact Players
RHP Aaron Nola
2B Bryson Stott
3B Alec Bohm
RHP Andrew Painter
OF Justin Crawford

Quick Thoughts: Despite playoff aspirations, the Phillies began the season with two homegrown rookies filling key roles as Justin Crawford took over as the starting center fielder and Andrew Painter claimed the No. 5 starter job. Meanwhile, longtime starter Aaron Nola ranks sixth all-time among Phillies pitchers with 35.8 WAR over 12 seasons.

24. Colorado Rockies

7 of 30
Colorado Rockies v Toronto Blue Jays
Ezequiel Tovar

40-Man Total: 21

Impact Players
SS Ezequiel Tovar
C Hunter Goodman
LHP Kyle Freeland
OF Brenton Doyle
RHP Chase Dollander
RHP Ryan Feltner
OF Jordan Beck

Quick Thoughts: Only the Guardians (23) have more homegrown players on their 40-man roster than the Rockies, but that stems more from the front office's inactivity than anything on the developmental side of things. Ezequiel Tovar and Hunter Goodman are All-Star level players, while Kyle Freeland might end up being the best pitcher in Rockies history by default.

23. Minnesota Twins

8 of 30
Minnesota Twins v Baltimore Orioles
Byron Buxton

40-Man Total: 17

Impact Players
OF Byron Buxton
OF Matt Wallner
2B Luke Keaschall
3B Royce Lewis
SS Brooks Lee
RHP Bailey Ober
C Ryan Jeffers

Quick Thoughts: Matt Wallner, Luke Keaschall, Royce Lewis and Brooks Lee are all former top prospects who have shown flashes in the majors, but have yet to fully establish themselves as high-level contributors. That gives the Twins more potential to climb than most teams in this section of the rankings, but also makes it difficult to move them any higher just yet.

22. Texas Rangers

9 of 30
Texas Rangers v Baltimore Orioles
Wyatt Langford

40-Man Total: 17

Impact Players
OF Wyatt Langford
RHP Jack Leiter
OF Evan Carter
3B Josh Jung
RHP Kumar Rocker

Quick Thoughts: The Rangers used significant draft capital on Wyatt Langford (No. 4 overall in 2023) and Jack Leiter (No. 2 overall in 2021), and both have shown flashes of developing into franchise-caliber players. After gutting the farm system to acquire MacKenzie Gore from the Nationals, the future pipeline has taken a hit.

21. Los Angeles Dodgers

10 of 30
Arizona Diamondbacks v Los Angeles Dodgers
Will Smith

40-Man Total: 13

Impact Players
C Will Smith
OF Andy Pages
RHP Emmet Sheehan

Quick Thoughts: With 23.1 WAR and a 128 OPS+ over eight seasons, Will Smith is squarely in the "best catcher of his generation" conversation, taking up the mantle from aging veterans like Salvador Perez and J.T. Realmuto. The Dodgers ability to attract established international talent serves as a pipeline of sorts that is difficult to quantify in these rankings.

20. New York Mets

11 of 30
New York Mets v San Francisco Giants
Nolan McLean

40-Man Total: 13

Impact Players
RHP Nolan McLean
C Francisco Alvarez
LHP David Peterson
IF/OF Brett Baty
1B Mark Vientos
OF Carson Benge

Quick Thoughts: The Mets system has not produced a true homegrown star since Pete Alonso, but right-hander Nolan McLean has that type of upside on the mound. He looked the part suiting up alongside some of the game's elite in the World Baseball Classic, and headlines a solid collection of rising prospect talent that also includes Opening Day right fielder Carson Benge.

19. Los Angeles Angels

12 of 30
Seattle Mariners v Los Angeles Angels
Zach Neto

40-Man Total: 18

Impact Players
SS Zach Neto
OF Mike Trout
OF Jo Adell
RHP José Soriano
1B Nolan Schanuel
LHP Reid Detmers

Quick Thoughts: Jo Adell (2017), Reid Detmers (2020), Zach Neto (2022) and Nolan Schanuel (2023) all lived up to their first-round pick pedigree. There is a solid case to be made that Neto has overtaken Mike Trout as the face of the franchise, and their approach of targeting MLB-ready talent in the draft has paid off with multiple everyday pieces.

18. Toronto Blue Jays

13 of 30
Toronto Blue Jays v Chicago White Sox
Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

40-Man Total: 8

Impact Players
1B Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
C Alejandro Kirk
OF Addison Barger
RHP Trey Yesavage

Quick Thoughts: The Blue Jays had Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (1B, batting 3rd), Alejandro Kirk (C, batting 5th) and Addison Barger (RF, batting 6th) all in the starting lineup for Game 7 of the World Series, while Trey Yesavage earned a hold in that game with 1.1 innings out of the bullpen. It's a small group, but a massive reason why Toronto was on the doorstep of a title in 2025.

17. San Francisco Giants

14 of 30
New York Mets v San Francisco Giants
Logan Webb

40-Man Total: 11

Impact Players
RHP Logan Webb
OF Heliot Ramos
C Patrick Bailey
RHP Ryan Walker
RHP Landen Roupp
RHP Randy Rodríguez (60-day IL)

Quick Thoughts: Logan Webb is one of baseball's true homegrown aces, while outfielder Heliot Ramos was the first homegrown Giants outfielder to earn an All-Star selection since Chili Davis in 1986. Can top prospect Bryce Eldridge break through as their next in-house offensive star?

16. Baltimore Orioles

15 of 30
Baltimore Orioles v Pittsburgh Pirates

40-Man Total: 12

Impact Players
SS Gunnar Henderson
C Adley Rutschman
2B Jackson Holliday
C Samuel Basallo
3B Jordan Westburg (60-day IL)

Quick Thoughts: The stalled development of Adley Rutschman, injuries to Jackson Holliday and Jordan Westburg and a disappointing 2025 campaign give the Orioles' homegrown talent collection a decidedly less rosy hue than this time a year ago. That said, Gunnar Henderson is still one of the game's most exciting young superstars, and their collection of young bats still fuels optimism.

15. Chicago Cubs

16 of 30
Washington Nationals v Chicago Cubs
Nico Hoerner

40-Man Total: 14

Impact Players
2B Nico Hoerner
OF Ian Happ
RHP Cade Horton
IF/OF Matt Shaw
DH Moisés Ballesteros
LHP Justin Steele (60-day IL)

Quick Thoughts: The Cubs have done a great job of hitting on college talent in the first round of the draft, going all the way back to Kris Bryant and Kyle Schwarber. Ian Happ (9th, 2015), Nico Hoerner (24th, 2018), Cade Horton (7th, 2022) and Matt Shaw (13th, 2023) are keeping that tradition alive, with Happ the longest-tenured player on the roster.

14. Arizona Diamondbacks

17 of 30
Atlanta Braves v Arizona Diamondbacks
Corbin Carroll

40-Man Total: 16

Impact Players
OF Corbin Carroll
SS Geraldo Perdomo
RHP Ryne Nelson
RHP Brandon Pfaadt
OF Alek Thomas
OF Jordan Lawlar

Quick Thoughts: Geraldo Perdomo (7.0 WAR) and Corbin Carroll (5.8 WAR) combined for a staggering 12.8 WAR last season, and give the D-backs a pair of homegrown cornerstone pieces. Starters Ryne Nelson and Brandon Pfaadt are useful rotation pieces for an organization with a thin history of developing arms.

13. St. Louis Cardinals

18 of 30
New York Mets v St. Louis Cardinals
Masyn Winn

40-Man Total: 20

Impact Players
SS Masyn Winn
1B Alec Burleson
C Iván Herrera
2B JJ Wetherholt
RHP Michael McGreevy
3B Nolan Gorman
OF Victor Scott II
OF Jordan Walker
OF Lars Nootbaar (60-day IL)

Quick Thoughts: The Cardinals can trot out an entirely homegrown lineup, and will likely do so on a regular basis this season as they focus on assessing in-house talent in the early stages of a rebuild. This could ultimately be a make-or-break season for former top prospects Nolan Gorman, Jordan Walker and Victor Scott II in St. Louis.

12. Boston Red Sox

19 of 30
Boston Red Sox v Cincinnati Reds
Roman Anthony

40-Man Total: 11

Impact Players
OF Roman Anthony
OF Jarren Duran
OF Ceddanne Rafaela
RHP Brayan Bello
LHP Connelly Early
2B Marcelo Mayer

Quick Thoughts: The Red Sox are sort of between faces of the franchise after Rafael Devers was traded to the Giants last summer, but rising star Roman Anthony checks all the boxes to be that guy. The organization has also done a much better job developing arms of late, with Brayan Bello, Connelly Early and Payton Tolle all coming out of their system.

11. Houston Astros

20 of 30
Boston Red Sox v Houston Astros
Hunter Brown

40-Man Total: 17

Impact Players
RHP Hunter Brown
SS Jeremy Peña
2B Jose Altuve
3B Carlos Correa
RHP Brayan Abreu
RHP Cristian Javier
RHP Lance McCullers Jr.
OF Jake Meyers
OF Joey Loperfido

Quick Thoughts: Names like Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, Cristian Javier and Lance McCullers Jr. carried a bit more weight a few years ago, but the Astros still have a strong core of homegrown talent. Hunter Brown has emerged as a legitimate staff ace, and was a great find by their scouting department in the fifth round of the 2019 draft.

10. Athletics

21 of 30
Houston Astros v Athletics
Nick Kurtz

40-Man Total: 14

Impact Players
1B Nick Kurtz
SS Jacob Wilson
OF Tyler Soderstrom
OF Lawrence Butler
OF Denzel Clarke
RHP Luis Morales

Quick Thoughts: The five position players listed above combined for 15.6 WAR in 2025, and they are a big reason why so many people were extremely high on the Athletics' offense entering the new season. All five have the potential to be cornerstone pieces, with Wilson, Soderstrom and Butler already inked to long-term extensions.

9. Pittsburgh Pirates

22 of 30
Pittsburgh Pirates v Cincinnati Reds
Paul Skenes

40-Man Total: 18

Impact Players
RHP Paul Skenes
RHP Mitch Keller
SS Konnor Griffin
RHP Bubba Chandler
RHP Braxton Ashcraft
RHP Carmen Mlodzinski
IF Jared Triolo

Quick Thoughts: The Pirates have a generational talent at the top of the rotation in homegrown ace Paul Skenes, and in fact boast an entirely homegrown starting rotation right now with Mitch Keller, Bubba Chandler, Braxton Ashcraft and Carmen Mlodzinski following him. They've not had the same luck developing bats, but Konnor Griffin has the superstar ceiling to change that narrative.

8. New York Yankees

23 of 30
Miami Marlins v New York Yankees
Aaron Judge

40-Man Total: 10

Impact Players
OF Aaron Judge
RHP Cam Schlittler
1B Ben Rice
C Austin Wells
RHP Will Warren
SS Anthony Volpe
RHP Clarke Schmidt (60-day IL)

Quick Thoughts: It's no longer just Aaron Judge propping up the Yankees ranking, as Cam Schlittler and Ben Rice have broken through as emerging stars after starting their pro careers with little fanfare. Rice was a 12th-round pick as a catcher back in 2021, while Schlittler was a seventh-round selection the following year.

7. Cincinnati Reds

24 of 30
Cincinnati Reds v Texas Rangers
Elly De La Cruz

40-Man Total: 18

Impact Players
SS Elly De La Cruz
LHP Andrew Abbott
RHP Chase Burns
1B Sal Stewart
2B Matt McLain
LHP Nick Lodolo
RHP Rhett Lowder
OF TJ Friedl
C Tyler Stephenson
RHP Tony Santillan
RHP Hunter Greene (60-day IL)

Quick Thoughts: If Hunter Greene was healthy rather than staring down an extended stay on the injured list, the Reds would have a strong case for a spot inside the top five. They could field an entirely homegrown rotation next season once Brady Singer reaches free agency, and they have 75 percent of an infield to build around as well.

6. Milwaukee Brewers

25 of 30
Tampa Bay Rays v Milwaukee Brewers

40-Man Total: 14

Impact Players
2B Brice Turang
OF Jackson Chourio
RHP Brandon Woodruff
RHP Jacob Misiorowski
OF Sal Frelick
RHP Abner Uribe
OF Garrett Mitchell

Quick Thoughts: Brice Turang, Sal Frelick and Jackson Chourio logged 10.8 WAR combined last season, while Brandon Woodruff and Jacob Misiorowski are expected to anchor the top of the starting rotation following the Freddy Peralta trade. The Brewers also have the No. 1 farm system in B/R's first rankings of 2026, so the pipeline is in great shape.

5. Kansas City Royals

26 of 30
MLB: MAR 30 Twins at Royals
Bobby Witt Jr.

40-Man Total: 18

Impact Players
SS Bobby Witt Jr.
1B Vinnie Pasquantino
3B Maikel Garcia
C Salvador Perez
LHP Kris Bubic
LHP Noah Cameron
OF Jac Caglianone
OF Kyle Isbel
C Carter Jensen

Quick Thoughts: The term "face of the franchise" gets tossed around more than it should, but that's truly what the Royals found when they selected Bobby Witt Jr. with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2019 draft. The development of Maikel Garcia and Vinnie Pasquantino has elevated the Kansas City offense, and a similar step forward from Jac Caglianone and Carter Jensen would make a real difference.

4. Atlanta Braves

27 of 30
Atlanta Braves v Arizona Diamondbacks
Ronald Acuña Jr.

40-Man Total: 15

Impact Players
OF Ronald Acuña Jr.
C Drake Baldwin
3B Austin Riley
OF Michael Harris II
2B Ozzie Albies
RHP Spencer Strider
RHP Hurston Waldrep
RHP Bryce Elder
RHP Spencer Schwellenbach (60-day IL)

Quick Thoughts: Even with Spencer Strider, Hurston Waldrep and Spencer Schwellenbach currently on the injured list, the current Braves roster still reads like a collection of homegrown stars. The front office landed Ozzie Albies (2013) and Ronald Acuña Jr. (2014) in consecutive international classes, and wisely locked them up with team-friendly extensions.

3. Seattle Mariners

28 of 30
Seattle Mariners v Los Angeles Angels
Julio Rodríguez

40-Man Total: 10

Impact Players
OF Julio Rodríguez
C Cal Raleigh
RHP Bryan Woo
RHP Logan Gilbert
RHP George Kirby
RHP Bryce Miller
RHP Emerson Hancock
2B Cole Young

Quick Thoughts: An entirely homegrown starting rotation aside from Luis Castillo that is one of the best in baseball would have been enough to slot the Mariners somewhere inside the top 10. Add to that a pair of bona fide superstar bats in J-Rod and Cal Raleigh and this group belongs squarely in the top tier.

2. Cleveland Guardians

29 of 30
MLB: APR 05 Cubs at Guardians - Game 1
José Ramírez

40-Man Total: 23

Impact Players
3B José Ramírez
RHP Gavin Williams
OF Steven Kwan
RHP Tanner Bibee
RHP Cade Smith
OF Chase DeLauter
LHP Parker Messick
C Bo Naylor
OF George Valera
IF Brayan Rocchio

Quick Thoughts: The Guardians were No. 1 in these rankings last year, and they have a compelling case for the top spot again. Their two best position players, their AL Rookie of the Year candidate, their top two starting pitchers and their closer are all part of that list above, and they are all guys who would fill an impact role on any team in baseball.

1. Detroit Tigers

30 of 30
Detroit Tigers v Arizona Diamondbacks
Tarik Skubal

40-Man Total: 19

Impact Players
LHP Tarik Skubal
OF Riley Greene
SS/3B Kevin McGonigle
1B Spencer Torkelson
C Dillon Dingler
OF Kerry Carpenter
IF Colt Keith
RHP Casey Mize
RHP Justin Verlander
RHP Will Vest
OF Parker Meadows

Quick Thoughts: The Tigers' entire starting lineup to begin the 2026 season, aside from the middle infield tandem of Gleyber Torres and Javier Báez, is homegrown. So is their all-world ace Tarik Skubal, 2025 All-Star Casey Mize and top bullpen arm Will Vest. The return of Justin Verlander as he comes down the homestretch of his Hall of Fame career is just icing on the cake.
