Stephen Curry Hypes Wemby as '1 of 1,' Spurs Star Talks Desire to Win NBA MVP Award
After watching San Antonio Spurs star center Victor Wembanyama dominate his Golden State Warriors teammate on Wednesday, two-time NBA MVP Stephen Curry had no choice but to praise the big man.
"He's got attributes that, obviously, you can't teach or truly understand because he's such a one of one," Curry told The Athletic's Jared Weiss after Wembanyama dropped 41 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Spurs to a 127-113 victory. "But I think most of all, from what I see, I don't know him like that, but his competitive spirit and his energy is contagious in there. It's not just his talent; it's the way he approaches it, too."
Wembanyama has made it no secret that he wants to be named NBA MVP this year, and Wednesday's performance continued an incredible run for the 2023 No. 1 pick. It was his second straight 41-point game and his fifth straight game with at least 15 rebounds. The Spurs (58-18) have won their last 10 games and have the chance to achieve their first 60-win season since 2016-17.
The 22-year-old once again reiterated his desire to earn his first career NBA MVP award this season.
"I do care deeply about it, and I think that all the greats that are in the Hall of Fame, or that are in our mind the best of all time, they have fought and grabbed everything they could grab early on in their career," Wembanyama told ESPN's Scott Van Pelt on SportsCenter after Wednesday's game, per Weiss. "If I want to make my spot among the greats, I gotta try to not miss any occasion. I have to put my name up there."
Wembanyama will have the chance to continue his campaign for this year's MVP award when the Spurs go for their 11th straight win on Thursday night when they visit the Los Angeles Clippers (39-37).
