MLB's Top Prospect Konnor Griffin Set for Pirates Debut amid Contract Rumors
After playing five games in Triple-A to start the season and amid rumors about a potential contract extension, Konnor Griffin is set to make his MLB debut for the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday.
The Pirates announced Griffin, MLB.com's No. 1 overall prospect entering 2026, will be called up from Indianapolis prior to their home opener against the Baltimore Orioles.
According to the New York Post's Jon Heyman, there's been "progress" in contract talks between Griffin and the PIrates, but there's "no evidence it's done yet."

Per Jason Mackey of MLB.com, the Pirates are calling up Griffin "for baseball reasons and because he's their best option" at shortstop.
ESPN's Buster Olney initially reported on Wednesday that Griffin and the Pirates have been engaged in contract talks since early in spring training, but the two sides have not yet closed the gap on what they want.
Olney added Thursday that the sides are discussing a nine-year, $140 million deal.
Teams have been acting to sign their top prospects to long-term extensions even before they make their MLB debut. Cooper Pratt got an eight-year, $50.8 million deal from the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday.
The Seattle Mariners followed Milwaukee's lead by extending Colt Emerson for eight years and $95 million on Tuesday. Neither Emerson nor Pratt has debuted in the big leagues yet.
Either of the contracts Olney reported that are being discussed for Griffin would set a new record for largest deal given out by a player before playing in their first MLB game.
Griffin is off to a scorching start in Triple-A with a .438/.571/.625 slash line in 21 plate appearances through five games.
With three weeks remaining until his 20th birthday on April 24, Griffin will become the first teenager to reach the big leagues since Elvis Luciano with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2019.
The Pirates and Orioles will open their three-game series at PNC Park on Friday at 4:12 p.m. ET.
