Aaron Glenn Explains Jets Using AI, Reveals If He'd Use It for Play-Calling Purposes on Video

The New York Jets coaching staff has been discussing how to utilize artificial intelligence during the 2026 season, head coach Aaron Glenn told reporters during Tuesday's annual league meetings in Phoenix.

Glenn said the discussions are being driven by offensive assistant and assistant quarterbacks coach Thomas Merkle and assistant offensive line coach Al Netter, both of whom joined the Jets in February after previously coaching at Stanford.

"Those guys are teaching us how to utilize all of that stuff, and it's been outstanding," Glenn said Tuesday. "We're trying to take that next step, us as coaches."

Glenn didn't have a clear answer as to what the Jets have used AI for so far, although he said he had been impressed by the "information" he'd learned through the technology.

The second-year Jets coach also laughed off the possibility that the technology could eventually call plays.

"No. I'm trusting myself on that," Glenn said.

The NFL introduced AI to the league last season through multiple initiatives, including introducing sideline devices with native AI capabilities as part of a partnership with Microsoft.

The league has also partnered with Amazon Web Services for usage of an AI tool that uses training and game videos alongside player data to make injury risk predictions.

However the Jets ultimately end up taking advantage of the amount of data that can be parsed by AI tools, Glenn hopes him and his new coaching staff bounce back from a 3-14 finish to his first season at the helm.
