Rick Pitino Says MCBB Product Is 'Best I've Seen In My 50 Years' Ahead of St. John's vs. Duke

St. John's head coach Rick Pitino is preparing to lead his team into Friday's Sweet 16 showdown against Duke, but he took the time to praise the state of college basketball.

While speaking to reporters on Thursday, Pitino declared, "On the court, the play and performance is the best I've seen in my 50 years."

Pitino went on to add, "There are no longer blue bloods in college basketball, and I think that's great."

Of course, Duke is one of schools that have been dubbed blue bloods, so Pitino's comments could serve as bulletin board material for the Blue Devils ahead of Friday's matchup.

Throughout his storied career, Pitino has been on both sides of the fence. He coached at Kentucky from 1989 to 1997 and won a national championship in 1996. He also spent a lot of time going up against blue bloods, previously leading Louisville in its rivalry against Kentucky and currently leading St. John's against Big East powerhouse UConn.

Whether blue bloods still exist or not, Pitino is correct in his assessment that the on-court product is as good as it's ever been. The 2026 NCAA Tournament has been filled with nail-biting moments and impressive performances by rising stars. Pitino and the Red Storm even needed a buzzer-beating layup to get past Kansas in the second round.

The Sweet 16 is sure to bring even more excitement with a slate of intriguing matchups, with St. John's vs. Duke leading the way. The Red Storm haven't made it to the Elite Eight since 1999, so Pitino and company will surely be motivated to break through this year against the Blue Devils.
