Yankees' Jazz Chisholm on 50-50 Challenge, 'Why Not Shoot for the Stars and Land on the Moon?'
Now that the 2026 MLB season is underway, New York Yankees outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. isn't backing down from his aspirations of becoming the second player ever to go 50-50.
Speaking to reporters after the Yankees' 7-0 win over the San Francisco Giants in Wednesday's season opener, Chisholm remained steadfast in his desire to hit 50 homers and steal 50 bases.
"Why not shoot for the stars and land on the moon?" Chisholm said. "I felt like every time I shoot low I end up low."
The stars are definitely what Chisholm has been aiming for since the start of spring training. He made his declaration about wanting to go 50-50 and accrue a 10-WAR season early in camp.
"Ask Cap (Aaron Judge)," Chisholm said on Feb. 19. "Real life. Let's just be realistic. I got all the tools for it. I have the speed, the power, the plate discipline, the eye at the plate, defense. I got everything to accumulate a 10-WAR season."
Chisholm's quest to get to 50 stolen bases is off to a good start. He swiped his first bag of the season in the second inning on Wednesday. The 28-year-old went 1-for-3 at the plate with a single and run scored.
The 50-50 club is exclusive to Shohei Ohtani at this point. He accomplished the feat in 2024, finishing with 54 homers and 59 steals in 159 games for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Chisholm has never come close to either 50 home runs or 50 steals in a season. His career-high in steals was 40 in 2024, and he hit a career-high 31 homers last year.
Even though it would seem unlikely Chisholm gets to the mark in either category, dreaming big is a good thing for a player who is also looking to cash in as he is set to become a free agent after the season.
If Chisholm comes close to accomplishing his individual goals, it will go a long way toward helping the Yankees reach the World Series this season.
