"Gampel Pavilion is one of the most electric atmospheres in all of college basketball, and our student-athletes and fans deserve a facility that matches the standard we hold ourselves to every day," athletic director David Benedict said. "UConn is the Basketball Capital of the World, and this investment ensures that when you walk through those doors, you feel it. We are incredibly excited about what this project means for the future of our programs."
The school isn't wasting any time, with work set to begin Tuesday. The women's team beat Syracuse 98-45 in the second round of the NCAA tournament on Monday, the last time the Huskies play in Storrs this season.
This time next year, UConn will embark on the second phase of its Gampel Pavilion revamp. That will focus on improving athlete training areas and premium spaces "designed to generate new income streams."
UConn's board of trustees approved in December the spending of $99.4 million toward the project.
The Huskies have called Gampel Pavilion home since January 1990.
