Virginia is heading to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA women's basketball tournament for the first time since 2000, and all it took was a little bit of history to make it happen.

The 10th-seeded Cavaliers stunned the second-seeded Iowa Hawkeyes with an 83-75 victory in double-overtime in Monday's second-round game in the Regional 4 in Sacramento.

Following wins over Arizona State, Georgia and Iowa, Virginia also became the first women's team to go from the First Four to the Sweet 16 in the same tournament.

Things won't get much easier for Virginia with a Sweet 16 matchup against third-seeded TCU after the Horned Frogs escaped the second round with an overtime victory of their own against Washington, but the ACC team will be well positioned to advance again if it comes down to the final moments.

After all, it has thrived in those pressure-packed situations all tournament.

The Cavaliers advanced past the First Four with a two-point win over Arizona State thanks to a defensive stop in the final seconds and then defeated seventh-seeded Georgia in overtime in the first round.

All that did was set the stage for the double-overtime thriller Monday.

Virginia played lockdown defense and held Iowa to nine points in the fourth quarter before Kymora Johnson tied things up with a jumper with 13 seconds remaining in the first overtime. The ACC representative then took over double-overtime and left little doubt about the outcome.

Johnson led the way with 28 points and four assists, while Paris Clark added 20 points, seven rebounds and four assists behind 7-of-10 shooting from the field and 3-of-4 shooting from deep.

A double-double of 15 points, 19 rebounds and six assists from Hannah Stuelke wasn't enough for the Hawkeyes, who also received 26 points from Ava Heiden and 21 points from Chazadi Wright. Those were the only three players to score more than five points for the Big Ten team, which proved too much to overcome.

Virginia now has an opportunity to advance to the Elite Eight for the first time since 1996 as it looks to continue its historic run.
