Creighton HC Greg McDermott Reportedly to Retire, Bluejays' New Men's Basketball HC Revealed
For the first time in 16 years, the Creighton men's basketball team will have a new head coach.
Per ESPN's Pete Thamel and Jeff Borzello, Creighton head coach Greg McDermott is retiring at the end of the 2025-26 season and will be replaced by Alan Huss, who was described as the "coach-in-waiting."
During his tenure with the Bluejays, McDermott racked up 365 wins and guided the team to an appearance in the Elite Eight in 2023. The team fell short of the NCAA Tournament this season after going 15-17 and will face Rutgers (14-19) in the quarterfinals of the College Basketball Crown postseason tournament on April 2.

McDermott also had Division I coaching stops at Northern Iowa and Iowa State, compiling a record of 514-319 over 25 seasons with 13 NCAA Tournament appearances. He memorably coached his son, Doug McDermott, from 2010 to 2014, which helped elevate Creighton from the Missouri Valley Conference to the Big East. He helped the Bluejays finish with records of .500 or above in Big East play in 11 of 13 seasons in the conference.
Thamel and Borzello explained how the plan for Huss to succeed McDermott came about before this season.
"The transition to Huss was hatched in April 2025, as Huss stepped down as the head coach of High Point after leading them to the NCAA tournament," Thamel and Borzello stated. "He was named coach-in-waiting with no finite timeline, and that timing is now he'll take over for the 2026-27 season."
Creighton will try to ensure that McDermott's tenure end on a high note as the team makes its way through the CBC, starting with the matchup against Rutgers next week.
