Bill Self Talks Kansas Future After March Madness Elimination with Loss to Rick Pitino, St. John's

Timothy RappMar 22, 2026

Kansas head coach Bill Self told reporters "I haven't decided" when asked if he would continue to coach next season and beyond.

"I'll get back and get with family and visit and see what's going on," he added. "I love what I do. I need to be able to do it where I'm feeling good and healthy to do it fairly well, so I'll get back home and it'll all be discussed."

He had previously indicated he planned to continue coaching.

"As long as I feel good, I don't know why I wouldn't keep doing it," he told reporters earlier in March. "I've had my personal health issues in some way that I've dealt with. Has it been a handicap in me doing my job? I don't think so. Has it been a pain in the butt to get through some of the things? Yeah, it has been. Everybody deals with something; I just happen to be dealing with some things right now."

The 63-year-old has dealt with health issues the past few years, namely having stents inserted for heart issues in both March 2023 and July 2025. He also missed a game in January due to dehydration and atrial fibrillation.

He's led the Jayhawks since 2003, going 648-166 with two national championships and four appearances in the Final Four. His Kansas teams have never missed the NCAA tournament.

But this year's group had a bit of a bizarre year, largely down to Darryn Peterson's wavering and mysterious availability.

"It's certainly a year that didn't seem like anything about it was very smooth," Self acknowledged. "I'm probably looking at [my career] now more in [two]-year increments so I've tried to focus on this season and get us to a second weekend which we failed. So I'll go back and break it down and see where that leads."

That culminated in Sunday's 67-65 loss against St. John's in the second round of the NCAA tournament, as Dylan Darling hit a game-winning layup at the buzzer:

Whether it was the moment that ended Self's run in Lawrence remains to be seen.
