Tennessee Beats UVA to Advance in March Madness as Fans Eye Iowa State Sweet 16 Matchup
The Tennessee Volunteers booked their spot in the Sweet 16 with a 79-72 win over the Virginia Cavaliers on Sunday.
Tennessee shot 47 percent from the field and 42 percent from three-point range. The Vols were also far better at the free-throw line with 76 percent of their foul shots made compared to 55 percent from Virginia.
Ja'Kobi Gillespie led the Vols with 21 points and four of the five starters were double figures.
The Vols' victory set up a second-weekend clash with the Iowa State Cyclones, which on paper, is one of the best defensive battles of the NCAA tournament.
Tennessee and Iowa State will play on Friday at the United Center. Michigan is already through to the Sweet 16 in the top half of the Midwest bracket and will face the winner of Texas Tech-Alabama.
