Avila has become a popular figure in college hoops stemming from his time excelling with Indiana State.
He's been given the nickname "Cream Abdul-Jabbar" for his use of goggles, much like NBA legend and Basketball Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar did when he dominated the league.
Avila has a few other nicknames as well.
Avila is part of a balanced scoring attack featuring seven players who post nine or more points per game. The Billikens caught fire Thursday, shooting 58 percent overall and leading by 17 or more points for the entire second half.
Saint Louis has now advanced to the second round, where the Billikens will face No. 1 seed Michigan on Saturday at 12:10 p.m. ET in Buffalo.
