Jack Hughes Sounds Off on Hockey HOF Having Gold Medal-Winning Puck, 'It's Bulls--t'

Julia StumbaughMar 17, 2026

New Jersey Devils star Jack Hughes isn't happy the puck he used to score the overtime goal that lifted Team USA to gold during the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics ended up in Canada.

The Hockey Hall of Fame is currently displaying the pucks from golden goals scored by both Hughes and USA women's hockey team star Megan Keller in a new exhibit in Toronto.

"I'm trying to get it. Like, that's bulls--t that the Hockey Hall of Fame has it, in my opinion," Hughes told ESPN's Greg Wyshynski. "Why would they have that puck?"

He concluded, per Wyshynski: "I don't see why Megan Keller or I shouldn't have those pucks."

Hughes said shortly after Team USA's win over Canada that he had "no idea" where the puck went after his overtime goal.

An International Ice Hockey Federation spokesperson later confirmed the puck had been "immediately secured after the game ended" by the IIHF and the Hall of Fame.

"The puck was designated for archival preservation with the HHOF to ensure its long-term safekeeping and historical recognition," the IIHF spokesperson told Sportico's Justin Birnbaum.

The exhibit featuring both Hughes and Keller's golden goal pucks opened Monday with Team USA and Seattle Torrent star Alex Carpenter in attendance.

Other artifacts at the exhibit included Olympic jerseys from Sweden's William Nylander, the United States' Hilary Knight and Canada's Connor McDavid.

The Hockey Hall of Fame also has the puck Canada's Sidney Crosby used to score an overtime golden goal against the United States during the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

The HHOF has never acquired the puck Mike Eruzione used to score in the third period against the Soviet Union during the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics. That piece of memorabilia has reportedly been sold multiple times since it was caught in the stands, although its current location is unknown.

Eruzione told ESPN's Joe McDonald in 2016 he had no idea where the puck was, but that he "should have kept it" because it "might be worth something."

According to Birnbaum, auction houses had a wide range of guesses as to what the puck used for Hughes' golden goal would fetch were it to hit auction.

Estimates as to the puck's value ranged from $20,000-$40,000 (Heritage Auctions) to $100,000 (Goldin) and $500,000 (Steiner Sports), according to Birnbaum.
