Stone Cold Comments on Possible Return, WrestleMania 42 Appearance

Monday Night RAW

WWE legend "Stone Cold" Steve Austin isn't seeking out another match, but he suggested this week that he is open to making appearances for the company, potentially even at WrestleMania 42 next month.

During an appearance Monday on Busted Open (h/t Steve Carrier of Ringside News), the 61-year-old Austin noted that while he no longer gets the "itch" to wrestle a match, he still does have the desire to create moments in the wrestling space at times.

"No, it'd be to go back for one of those moments," Austin said. "Not a match itch, right? Because with a… yeah, I got a left knee replacement a little over a year ago and my leg feels good, I'm glad I got it done. But yeah, I get the itch for certain moments, but to try to do a match, no."

After being retired for 19 years, Austin made his in-ring return at WrestleMania 38 in Arlington, Texas, beating Kevin Owens in an impromptu No Holds Barred match, which main evented Night 1.

Given how long it had been since he last wrestled a match, Austin was impressive, but there has been no indication since then that he intends to have another official bout.

During Austin's 19-year retirement, and even since his match at WrestleMania 38, he has made numerous appearances for WWE, though, and many of them included physicality with The Texas Rattlesnake hitting some Stone Cold Stunners.

On Busted Open (h/t Felix Upton of Ringside News), Austin discussed the balance between being involved with WWE, while not taking time or opportunities away from the current crop of Superstars.

"It's funny because you'll sit there or they'll put something on Instagram and people will say, 'Oh, no, no, man, he's too old, let the current talent have the spotlight,'" Austin said. "Let the current talent have the spotlight, of course. If I can go out there and do something, that'd be fine. They got a pretty good roster, you know? So I think those guys and gals, they need all the time."

Austin mentioned his appearance at last year's WrestleMania 41 when he drove an ATV down to the ring and accidentally crashed into the barrier before announcing the attendance figure.

Stone Cold expressed his belief that he "s--t the bed" because of the accident, but he didn't rule out another appearance at WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas next month or at another WWE event, saying, "We'll see if they have me back. If they do, that's cool."

Austin and WWE clearly still have a strong relationship, as the company mentioned and celebrated 3:16 Day numerous times during Monday night's episode of Raw.

Every year, wrestling fans celebrate 3:16 Day on March 16, as it references the famous Austin 3:16 tagline.

Austin is one of the biggest and most popular stars in wrestling history, so if there is an available segment at WrestleMania 42 that makes sense for an Austin appearance, there is reason to believe WWE would happily reach out.

McIntyre vs. Fatu Reportedly Scheduled for WrestleMania

Despite a match between Drew McIntyre and Jacob Fatu being advertised for this week's episode of SmackDown, there are reportedly still plans for them to clash in an even bigger bout.

According to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t Carrier), McIntyre vs. Fatu is scheduled for WrestleMania 42, and the announced SmackDown match is meant to "set up" their encounter on the Grandest Stage of Them All.

The issues between McIntyre and Fatu started back in October when they were both vying to become No. 1 contender for the WWE Championship. However, before their scheduled match for the No. 1 contendership, Fatu was attacked backstage, and he missed the next few months of action.

Fatu returned during the Three Stages of Hell match between McIntyre and Cody Rhodes for the WWE title on the Jan. 9 episode of SmackDown.

While The Samoan Werewolf stopped McIntyre from escaping the steel cage, Rhodes intervened, prompting Fatu to turn his attention toward Cody. Drew then escaped the cage to become the new WWE champion.

In the weeks and months since then, Fatu has been at odds with both Rhodes and McIntyre, but he has especially wanted to get his hands on Drew due in part to McIntyre's interference during an Elimination Chamber qualifying match between Fatu, Rhodes and Sami Zayn.

A couple of weeks ago on SmackDown, Fatu interfered during McIntyre's WWE title defense against Rhodes, allowing The American Nightmare to win the match and the championship.

McIntyre called out SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis last week, only to be interrupted by Fatu, setting the stage for their match.

It seems possible the SmackDown match either won't happen because of a pre-match brawl or won't have a definitive ending, which would be a logical way to set up a decisive bout between McIntyre and Fatu at WrestleMania.

Reported Plans for Penta's IC Title Match at WrestleMania

After recently beating Dominik Mysterio for the Intercontinental Championship, there are reportedly plans in place for Penta to defend the title at WrestleMania 42.

According to WrestleVotes on Fightful Select (h/t Carrier), Penta is expected to compete in a multi-man match at WrestleMania, involving "three or four" Superstars.

That would be similar to last year's WrestleMania 41 when Bron Breakker put the IC title on the line against Penta, Dirty Dom and Finn Balor in a Fatal 4-Way.

It is unclear who Penta's opponents will be at WrestleMania 42, but there is no shortage of viable options.

If they don't face each other in a singles match, both El Grande Americanos could be options, as could Dragon Lee, who pushed Penta to his limit in a title match. Monday night on Raw.

Other notable names on the Raw roster without a clear and obvious direction from WrestleMania include Gunther, Je'Von Evans and Rusev.

Evans is perhaps the most likely of any of them to be part of the match since he would benefit from a showcase on the WrestleMania stage after recently getting called up to the main roster.

Regardless of who his opponents are, Penta figures to put on a show at the Showcase of the Immortals, and he seemingly has a strong chance to retain given that he only recently won the IC title.
