Travis Kelce Reveals When He Knew He'd Return to Chiefs Amid NFL Retirement Rumors

Adam WellsMar 11, 2026

Having confirmed his return for a 14th season with the Kansas City Chiefs, Travis Kelce opened up about when he knew that he wanted to keep playing.

On the latest episode of the New Heights podcast (starts at 1:00 mark), Kelce revealed that he knew "about midway through the" 2025 season that he wasn't going to retire.

Asked by his brother, Jason, why he waited so long to say he was going to keep playing if knew that long ago, Travis explained:

"You gotta let the emotions clear, and you gotta have a clear head. I've made decisions based off of emotions and they haven't always played out the right way. I think taking a step back, letting the emotions settle down, the frustrations from the season, of course I want to come back. Of course I don't want to end my career not making the playoffs. Not having one of the best years, and definitely having a down year. I think taking a step back and letting it all kinda build. What's my desire? What's my body feel like? How did I feel going into this year versus coming out of this year, and where my body was at. Even letting it kinda settle, it still felt like I was hungry enough to get back at it. Obviously, there's still some of that grit and emotion that I f--king hated the way that s--t ended last year, and I wanna do this. I wanna make it right. And I wanna get another chance at another f--king Super Bowl."

Kelce, who became a free agent for the first time in his career, quickly ended the drama about where he was going to play by agreeing to a one-year deal worth up to $15 million to stay with the Chiefs on Monday.

It seemed more likely than not that Kelce was going to keep playing once it got close to free agency without him announcing his retirement. He presumably would have wanted to give the Chiefs enough advance notice that they could have planned to add a replacement if they knew he wasn't going to be back.

Even though there was speculation that it wasn't a guarantee Kelce would return with the Chiefs, it's hard to imagine him in another uniform at this point in his career.

There are certainly examples of legendary players leaving the franchise they are most associated with. Tom Brady left the New England Patriots. Jerry Rice had stints with multiple teams after leaving the San Francisco 49ers.

Kelce could have followed that path, but it's hard to imagine him finding a better scenario to compete for a Super Bowl in 2026 than in Kansas City.

The Chiefs have work to do this offseason to upgrade their roster and Patrick Mahomes' recovery from a torn ACL will be a huge storyline, but they also have two first-round draft picks and a new running back in Kenneth Walker III to help the roster coming off a 6-11 record in 2025.

Amid all of the turmoil for the Chiefs last season, Kelce remained highly productive in their offense. He led the team with 76 receptions, 851 yards and tied for the team lead with five touchdown catches.
