Adrian Autry Fired as Syracuse MCBB HC After 3 Seasons, Never Made NCAA Tournament

The Syracuse men's basketball team will be searching for a new head coach this offseason.

Per ESPN's Pete Thamel, Syracuse fired head coach Adrian Autry on Wednesday after three seasons with him at the helm. Autry failed to lead the Orange to the NCAA Tournament during his tenure as head coach.

Matt Norlander of CBS Sports gave insight into potential candidates to replace Autry:

Syracuse ended the 2025-26 season with a 15-17 record after losing 86-69 to SMU in the first round of the ACC tournament on Tuesday. This marked the Orange's second straight season with a record below .500, and Autry ended his tenure with a combined record of 49-48.

"I don't shy away from the job that I did," Autry said in his postgame news conference after Tuesday's loss, per Thamel and Jeff Borzello. "I'm harder on myself than anybody. I didn't get the results that we wanted."

Thamel and Borzello added that athletic director John Wildhack announced his retirement last month and is planning to leave the school on July 1, so the incoming athletic director is expected to make the next hire.

Autry played at Syracuse from 1990 to 1994 under the legendary Jim Boeheim and then joined Boeheim's coaching staff in 2011. He was later promoted to associated head coach before being tabbed as Boeheim's replacement following the Hall of Famer's retirement in 2023.

"I think he's a good coach," Boeheim said Wednesday on ACC Network, per ESPN. "I think he got in a situation where his best players just didn't play the way they needed to play, and it cost him his job."

If Syracuse wants to keep its fans happy, it would be wise to look to another alum to replace Autry.

Former Orange star guard and assistant coach Gerry McNamara, who was part of the team's 2003 national championship, coached Siena to the NCAA Tournament in just his second season at the helm. A homecoming would certainly boost the morale for Syracuse as it looks to return to national prominence.
