Max Scherzer Calls Daughter's Viral Letter to Blue Jays 'The Cutest Thing' After Signing Contract

Julia StumbaughMar 3, 2026

Max Scherzer says his daughter, Brooke, was inspired to pen her viral note asking for the Toronto Blue Jays to re-sign her father after writing Christmas letters to Santa Claus.

One night in December, Brooke came down with a sealed letter addressed to the Blue Jays and asked for a stamp, Scherzer told reporters Tuesday.

"When she went to bed, we opened it and saw what she had written. Erica and I both, we looked at it. Cutest thing you could possibly imagine, when you read that, how much it meant to her to be in Toronto," Scherzer said.

Scherzer's wife, Erica Scherzer, shared an image of the letter on social media after the Blue Jays announced last week they had re-signed Scherzer for his 19th MLB season.

Brooke started out the letter by telling the Blue Jays she was "so sorry that you didn't win the World Series."

"I hope that you win next time," Brooke wrote. "I hope my dad is back on the team. My whole family loves spending time in Toronto with our dad."

Scherzer's deal with the Blue Jays includes a $3 million base salary in addition to $10 million in innings pitched incentives, per USA Today's Bob Nightengale.

He could make as much as $13 million if he pitches 155 innings for the Jays in 2026, per Nightengale.

Scherzer pitched 85.0 regular-season innings and 14.1 postseason frames to help the Blue Jays reach the World Series during his age-40 season.

The Blue Jays will now hope that bringing back Scherzer while also bringing in starting pitcher Dylan Cease, reliever Tyler Rogers and infielder Kazuma Okamoto will be enough to help the club overcome the losses of Bo Bichette and Seranthony Dominguez and make it back to the Fall Classic in 2026.
