New Derek Carr Rumors Reveal 'Real Interest' from Contenders in Retired QB

Zach BacharFeb 25, 2026

Multiple contending teams have "real interest" in adding retired quarterback Derek Carr, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

Per Schultz, there's a "strong belief" among teams looking for quarterback help that Carr is serious about ending his retirement and returning to play in 2026.

The 34-year-old announced that he would be stepping away from the sport in May 2025.

Carr spent the 2024 season with the New Orleans Saints, completing 67.7 percent of his throws for 2,145 yards and 15 touchdowns compared to five interceptions. He only appeared in 10 games due to an oblique injury as well as a fractured hand

Schultz noted that the Saints still own his rights.

Carr retired partly due to a labral tear in his shoulder and damage to his rotator cuff, although NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo reported that he spent the 2025 season rehabbing his shoulder and currently has no limitations.

The four-time Pro Bowler also explained that he'd be open to ending his retirement on Feb. 12.

"Would I do it? Absolutely, I would do it," Carr said on his podcast with his brother, Home Grown with David and Derek Carr. "I told you two things. I'd have to be healthy, and I would want a chance to win a Super Bowl. And obviously, that's a tough thing to find. That's hard to do."

While some teams could hesitate to acquire Carr given his recent injury history, it's worth noting that he suited up in 49 of a possible 51 games from 2021-23.
