MLB's No. 1 Prospect Konnor Griffin Stirs Superstar Hype with 2 HRs for Pirates vs. Red Sox

Doric SamFeb 24, 2026

The Pittsburgh Pirates haven't had much to celebrate in recent years, but it appears that one of their youngsters is ready to bring the franchise some hope for the future.

During Tuesday's spring training game against the Boston Red Sox, Pirates shortstop and MLB's No. 1 prospect Konnor Griffin launched a pair of home runs, much to the delight of Pittsburgh fans.

The Pirates selected Griffin with the No. 9 overall pick in the 2024 draft, and it didn't take him long to prove his worth. In his first season in the minor leagues last year, he rose from Single-A to High-A to Double-A while hitting .333 and combining for 21 home runs, 94 RBI and 65 stolen bases across 122 games.

Griffin has already gained some fans in the big leagues, as Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper had some high praise for him during Monday's 4-3 win by the Pirates and said he hopes to see him take an accelerated path to the majors.

"He's gonna be a stud, man," Harper told NBC Sports Philadelphia's Tom McCarthy and Ruben Amaro Jr., perย Brendan Samsonย of MLB.com. "... Obviously, I don't play for the Pirates, but I hope they let him move through the organization pretty quickly and let him get to the big leagues."

Griffin's quick improvement in his first year in the minors has him projected to be a future superstar for the Pirates, who have not made the playoffs since 2015.

"While Griffin entered pro ball with four plus tools and questions about the fifth -- the hit -- he exited his first pro season having answered all of them," Griffin'sย scouting reportย stated. "The holes in his swing were closed thanks to some mechanical adjustments like his hand placement, allowing him to use his plus bat speed, strength and leverage to get to his plus-plus raw power fairly consistently. There's plenty more to come as he learns to turn on pitches in the air more and react better to spin. He continues to add strength to his 6-foot-4 frame without sacrificing any of his athleticism or flexibility."

Along with reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Paul Skenes, Griffin can be a cornerstone for the Pirates to build around as they try to claw their way into playoff contention following a decade of disappointments.
