Jalen Brunson Explains Why He Wants to Spend 'Rest of My Career' with Knicks After Contract Comments

Adam WellsFeb 24, 2026

Jalen Brunson doesn't have designs on leaving the New York Knicks after a recent Vanity Fair interview generated some attention.

The three-time All-Star told Stefan Bondy of the New York Post that he hopes to spend the "rest of my career" with the Knicks:

"I would love to be here for the rest of my career. I love this place. They've welcomed me with open arms. They've been behind my back since Day 1. I built a life here. And I love the city, I love the fans, I love everything this place has offered me, on and off the court. So I just love it here. And I'd love to stay."

Those comments come after Brunson was recently profiled by Tom Kludt for Vanity Fair and spoke about wanting the Knicks to "do right by me" after he gave them a team-friendly discount on an extension signed in July 2024:

"If I'm thinking about playing well to make sure I get paid, that could mess with me. I play best when I have a free mind, and that did that for me. A lot of people say I sacrificed for the team. One hundred percent I sacrificed for the team. But most importantly, I made sure my family and I are taken care of. … Obviously we'd love for them to do right by me. I think anyone would. I feel like I sacrificed."

Brunson accepted a four-year, $156.5 million deal when he would have been eligible to extend with the Knicks for five years and up to $269 million if he waited until after the 2024-25 season to sign.

Sam Rose, Brunson's agent, told Adrian Wojnarowski at the time that Brunson will be able to make up for the difference on the back end when he could sign either a four-year, $323 million extension in the summer of 2028 or five-year, $418 million in 2029.

There's certainly significant risk for Brunson by making a bet that far down the road. He will only be 31 years old in 2028, but there's always the risk of a potential catastrophic injury.

Brunson taking the discounted deal has been huge for the Knicks' cap flexibility. They were able to extend Mikal Bridges for four years, $150 million last summer without going into the second apron. They are currently $369,736 under the second apron.

Despite being the Knicks' best player since he first signed with the team in the summer of 2022, Brunson is currently their third-highest paid player behind Karl-Anthony Towns and OG Anunoby.

The cap flexibility was designed to help make the Knicks a title contender. They came close last season, advancing to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2000.

Brunson currently has the Knicks sitting in third place in the East with a 37-21 record. Depending on how this postseason plays out, there could be significant changes made to the roster over the summer.

There would seem to be very little chance Brunson gets moved, but the pieces around him could look different in 2026-27 if they come up short in the playoffs.

Brunson, who has finished in the top 10 in MVP voting in each of the past two seasons, is averaging 26.8 points and 6.2 assists per game in 53 starts this season.
