Caleb Williams Wants Bears to Have 'Greatest Offense,' Eyes NFL Scoring Record

Timothy RappFeb 17, 2026

Caleb Williams has major aspirations for the Chicago Bears' offense this season.

"I really want to become the greatest offense this year," he said during an appearance on Maxx Crosby's podcast (52:25 mark). "So that's really on my mind, being able to find ways to put up points every single time we're out there. And so, you know, honestly, whatever, whatever that comes down to. And I think that starts with the first two of what I said is, you know, getting these completions, starting drives, getting drives going and then, you know, helping with protection or making sure that that I deliver some easy, easy, what we call runner balls. And getting these drives going and scoring. I think the average was 38.5 or something like that from Denver. That Peyton [Manning] year, where he had 50 touchdowns. ... I think it's 39 is the number, you know, average score. That's what we're going for."

The Broncos did average 37.9 points per game during the 2013 season, though technically the 1950 Los Angeles Rams hold the record (38.8 PPG). They only played a 12-game season, however.

The Bears are going to have some work to do to average 39 points per game. In 2025, the team averaged 25.9 points per contest, a solid number that ranked them ninth in the NFL. The only team to eclipse the 30-point mark for the season was the Rams (30.5 PPG).

In 2024, three teams eclipsed the mark—the Detroit Lions (33.2 PPG), Buffalo Bills (30.9 PPG) and Baltimore Ravens (30.5 PPG). Between the 2022-23 seasons, no teams averaged 30 or more points per contest.

The last team to come anywhere close to the 2013 Broncos was the 2018 Kansas City Chiefs, who put up 35.3 points per game led by Patrick Mahomes.

So Williams is setting extremely lofty heights, though his first year with head coach Ben Johnson was undoubtedly a success. Williams finished his sophomore campaign with 3,942 yards, 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions, completing 58.1 percent of his passes.

That last number is going to have to go up for the Bears to take the next step on offense, but another year building chemistry with players like Rome Odunze, Luther Burden III and Colston Loveland—and another year growing comfortable in Johnson's scheme—should help.

Setting NFL records may be a touch unrealistic, but you can't blame Williams for setting the bar high.
