Red Sox's Roman Anthony Reportedly Set to Be Named to Team USA's WBC Roster Amid Carroll Injury
In need of an outfielder due to Corbin Carroll's injury, Boston Red Sox standout Roman Anthony is set to join Team USA for the World Baseball Classic.
Per Tim Healey of the Boston Globe, Anthony will be added to the U.S. roster if he passes his Red Sox physical at spring training.
Anthony's 2025 season ended on Sept. 2 due to an oblique strain. He told reporters at Fenway Fest in January that he could have returned to play if the Red Sox advanced deeper into the playoffs, but he didn't feel fully healthy until close to Thanksgiving.

"It'd be an honor, for sure. It was something I'm super excited about, and when I got news of it, obviously super sad for (Carroll). You don't want to see that ever. But it would be a great opportunity and a great learning lesson for me, to go be around a bunch of the best players in the game," Anthony told Healey about playing for the U.S.
Carroll was one of four outfielders on the original Team USA roster, along with Aaron Judge, Byron Buxton and Pete Crow-Armstrong.
However, during the first day of spring training with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday, Carroll suffered a broken hamate bone in his hand. He underwent surgery on Wednesday and was ruled out for the WBC, with his status for the start of the MLB regular season up in the air.
Per MLB.com's Jon Morosi, Anthony was among seven potential outfield replacements being considered by USA Baseball officials after Carroll's injury.
Steven Kwan, Tyler Soderstrom, Riley Greene, James Wood, Wyatt Langford and Kyle Stowers were the others under consideration.
A second-round pick in the 2022 draft, Anthony ascended up the prospect rankings during his time in the minors. He was ranked as the best position player and No. 2 overall prospect in MLB entering last season by FanGraphs' Eric Longenhagen.
The Red Sox called up Anthony to make his MLB debut on June 9. He quickly adjusted to big-league pitching, hitting .292/.396/.463 in 71 games before injuring his oblique.
Despite playing in just 71 games, Anthony still finished third in AL Rookie of the Year voting.
Team USA will open WBC play on March 6 against Brazil.
