A permanent display honoring a legendary Indiana basketball coach is coming to Assembly Hall.

Indiana announced Monday plans for the commission and installation of a bronze statue of former head coach Bob Knight. According to a press release from the school, the statue will be built alongside the 1976 National Championship statues in the south lobby of Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.

Knight was Indiana's head coach from 1971 to 2000, and he led the Hoosiers to three national championships, five Final Fours and 11 Big Ten regular-season titles. He put together one of the best college basketball seasons of all time in 1975-76 when the Hoosiers went 32-0 and won a national title.

Knight was named the AP Coach of the Year three times and ended his time at Indiana with a 662–239 record.

"Coach Knight's influence on the game of basketball is immeasurable, but his impact on this university and Hoosier basketball fans is even deeper," said IU Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Scott Dolson. "On a personal level, having started my career here as a student manager under Coach Knight, I saw firsthand the unparalleled standard of excellence he demanded. He taught me, and countless others, that success is the result of meticulous preparation and unwavering discipline. This statue will be a well-deserved tribute to a man who didn't just win games; he changed how the sport is played."

Knight, who also coached at Army and Texas Tech, has a career record of 902-371, with his 902 career coaching victories ranking sixth in college basketball history.

Indiana is hoping to get back to the success it saw under Knight, but things haven't gone the Hoosiers way in recent years, as they haven't reached the Sweet 16 in 10 years. Indiana is currently 16-8 on the year and 8-6 in conference play.
