Updated Bracketology for 2026 March Madness After UNC vs. Duke

Paul KasabianFeb 7, 2026

No. 14 UNC overcame an 11-point second half deficit to defeat No. 4 Duke 71-68 on Saturday at home in the Dean Smith Center.

UNC trailed 68-62 with 2:51 remaining but hit a trio of threes down the stretch capped by Seth Trimble's corner shot with four-tenths of a second left.

Where does this result leave Duke and UNC as far as their projected tournament seeding goes?

The consensus on Bracket Matrix, which aggregates a host of analyst opinions, going into Saturday's games had Duke as a strong No. 1 seed and UNC as a borderline No. 5 seed, just above the No. 6 seed spot.

It's hard to knock Duke too much after this effort. UNC is a solid team, and losing by three on the road to a top-15 AP ranked squad shouldn't be a huge deal considering the rest of the Blue Devils' resume.

Duke is now 21-2 overall with a 10-1 ACC record with wins over the following ranked teams: Kansas, Arkansas, Florida, Michigan State and Louisville (twice). Needless to say, Duke would have to stumble down the stretch to lose its No. 1 seeding. The Blue Devils' other loss was an 82-81 game to No. 13 Texas Tech on a neutral floor (Madison Square Garden).

That being said, Duke is clearly a step behind Arizona and Michigan, who can almost waltz to No. 1 seeds right now. If anything, the Blue Devils are far closer to the teams behind them fighting for No. 1 seeds in UConn, Illinois, Iowa State and Houston.

As for UNC, the Tar Heels' tournament stock just vastly improved. They had a few solid wins themselves vs. Kansas and at Virginia, but this victory is now the Tar Heels' crown jewel in their resume.

UNC has a great record at 19-4 overall and 7-3 in the ACC. The Tar Heels' biggest issue is a tough loss at Stanford, currently ranked No. 79 in the NET. A road loss to Cal (No. 55 in the NET) doesn't look great either.

Still, UNC has responded well with five straight wins and has a case as a potential top-four seed now.

James Fletcher III of On3 provided this take.

"The Tar Heels get a fifth Q1 win of the season knocking off the NET rankings' No. 3 team. The Tar Heels are sure to move up from No. 27 in the NET and No. 30 at KenPom, providing them the path to jump at least one seed-line, if not two from their previous spot. Among the teams in that range, none have a win which matches this.

"Duke, meanwhile, will sit on the edge of the 1-seed line, missing an opportunity to further separate themselves from the pack of chasing teams. They now sweat out the updated analytic numbers as a group of teams compare resumes behind Arizona and Michigan."

Other bracketologists offered their thoughts.

Both teams will next play road games on Tuesday. Duke will play Pitt, and UNC will visit Miami.
