Why Wizards Made Anthony Davis Trade After Trae Young Deal Reportedly Revealed

Timothy RappFeb 4, 2026

The Washington Wizards shocked the NBA world by trading for Anthony Davis on Wednesday. The intent was clear—to build a contender around him and Trae Young.

According to NBA reporters Marc Stein and Jake Fischer, "Among Washington's motivations for making the deal was showing the newly acquired Young that they are serious about being a playoff team next season. The Wizards want to hash out a contract extension with Young in the offseason. Young, 27, also has the option of playing out the 2026-27 season on a player option valued at near $50 million."

The move for Washington also allowed the Wizards to bring in the type of players who likely wouldn't have signed with them in free agency.

Per that report, "Washington was projected to have roughly $80 million in salary cap space this summer. The Wizards, though, are realistic about their standing leaguewide as a free-agent destination, which was another spark that led them to pursue trades for Young and Davis as 'pre-agency' acquisitions."

Finally, the Wizards reportedly wanted to add a frontcourt pairing for Alex Sarr that would allow him to slide back to power forward. While Stein and Fischer noted that Davis has traditionally preferred to play the 4 himself, the Wizards clearly see him as more of a 5 next to Sarr.

Young and Davis should been a fantastic pick-and-roll pairing if they can stay healthy, providing the Wizards with the most star power they've had since the John Wall-Bradley Beal years. The team could have chosen to undergo a longer rebuild around Sarr, Kyshawn George and Tre Johnson, though rolling the dice on the NBA draft lottery presents its own risks.

Young and Davis don't make the Wizards championship contenders, but they make them a lot more competitive and fun as their younger prospects develop. The Wizards are gunning for a playoff berth in 2026-27.
