'SMFH,' Carmelo Anthony Calls Out Syracuse on IG Highlight After Son Kiyan, Orange Lose to UNC

Julia StumbaughFeb 3, 2026

Former NBA and Syracuse legend Carmelo Anthony apparently wasn't happy to watch his son Kiyan Anthony and the Orange lose to No. 14 UNC on Monday night.

"SMFH," Anthony commented on a reel of Syracuse freshman forward Donnie Freeman making a three-pointer in the loss.

Syracuse fell to 13-10 (4-6 ACC) with Monday night's loss. The Orange have nw lost five of their last six games.

The game marked the first time a Syracuse men's basketball game has been featured on a national ESPN broadcast this season.

Syracuse was unable to take advantage of the opportunity. North Carolina took the lead less than two minutes into play and never trailed again.

UNC climbed out to a lead as many as 32 points in the second half before seemingly letting up pressure on Syracuse with what Tar Heels head coach Hubert Davis called an "unacceptable" stretch of basketball.

That allowed the Orange to claw their way back into the game with a 37-15 run that cut the deficit to single digits down the stretch.

The comeback ultimately came too late for Syracuse, who were led by Freeman's 23 points on 8-for-14 shooting the loss.

Anthony said after the defeat he felt that the Orange should have run more plays for Freeman in the second half, per Cooper Andrews of the Daily Orange:

Only two other starters, Naithan George and J.J. Starling, contributed double-digit points totals. Nate Kingz contributed eight points and William Kyle III was held to two.

Anthony came off the bench to contribute 10 points in 16 minutes, although he went 3-for-10 from the field and 0-for-3 from deep.

The loss put increasing pressure on third-year head coach Adrian Autry, who has led the program to a 47-41 overall record without hope of an NCAA Tournament bid over the last three seasons.

Autry has five days to find some answers for his floundering team before the Orange take on another ranked opponent next weekend with a Saturday road matchup at No. 18 Virginia.
