J.R. Smith Dunks All over Exhibition Game at Basketball Clinic in Guam
J.R. Smith is in Guam right now hosting youth basketball clinics with fellow NBA associate Gerald Green and Cleveland Cavaliers director of player development Phil Handy.
It's a strange time to escape to the Pacific for Smith, who's yet to sign a contract with an NBA team and may or may not be able to work things out in Cleveland.
Nonetheless, J.R. isn't going to let a little thing like career uncertainty stop him from balling out and attempting to dunk the entirety of Guam into the bottom of the ocean.
Smith posted a video on Instagram recorded at an exhibition game at Handy's 94 Feet of Game clinic. In it, he drives into the lane and elevates as he did so often with the Denver Nuggets. His defender wasn't ready. Guam wasn't ready.
As for Smith's free-agency plans, he told the Pacific Daily News' Grant Wieman he doesn't know where he'll end up but said he wants to play for a team where he can make an impact.
"I just want to be somewhere I can make a difference. I don’t want to be somewhere I can’t have an affect on the team. ...
I would love to be a starter, but it depends on the situation and what team I’m on. Cleveland is in a situation where they don’t really need me to start. I can come off the bench and bring the energy and stuff like that.
"
I'm convinced J.R. doesn't want to start because it ruins the Batman-to-the-rescue mentality he's cultivated over a decade of coming off NBA benches. If Smith starts it robs him of a chance to save the damsel in distress, which is definitely how he views what he does.
Dan is on Twitter. RIP Guam.
