Under Armour Curry One 'Blackout' Release Date, Pics and Retail Price

Tyler ConwayAug 4, 2015

2015 has been a massive year for Under Armour. Stephen Curry took home the NBA MVP and won a championship. Jordan Spieth came within a stroke of winning golf's first three majors. Ballerina Misty Copeland burst onto the national scene as a household name.

Thanks in part to their smart investments with athletes, the brand saw a 29 percent increase in revenue during the year's second quarter, as reported by Sarah Meehan of the Baltimore Business Journal. It's the type of growth so rarely made by already-established companies that it's no surprise Under Armour is looking to keep the momentum going.

Later this week, the rollout of the Curry One shoe will continue with the "Blackout" colorway. First unveiled in March, the Curry Ones were the first major push into the shoe game for the Golden State Warriors star.

“To be part of this process and to see the Curry One come to life is a dream come true,” Curry told NBA.com in January. “What makes this experience so meaningful is that the shoe represents the belief I have in myself and the belief of my family, close friends, teammates and coaches that's driven me to get better and led me to where I am today.”

The "Blackout" release, which hits retailers Aug. 12 (price TBD), fits the billing. Similar to the pair he was seen wearing during the NBA Finals, the "Blackout" eschews nearly all other colors for an all-black base. However, unlike the Finals pair, even the sole has been blacked out. (The sole was yellow during the Finals.)

The only color deviation comes at the most important spots: the Under Armour branding and the Curry-trademarked 30 design.

“The Curry One represents Stephen’s journey and the legacy he is building that is inspiring and motivating the next generation of basketball players,” said Dave Dombrow, Under Armour's vice president and creative director of footwear, per NBA.com. “Through hard work and self-conviction, Stephen willed himself into becoming one of the game’s best players."

There are some subtle variations on the black—the sole shines bright when light hits, while the upper carries the same Curry One design from the original—but otherwise this is a versatile shoe.

Like all-whites, all-blacks tend to be used just as much off the court as on it. The all-black shoe goes with anything, tends to attract less mess than the all-whites and looks pretty dope when you have the right shirt-pants combination.

The Curry One also remains a solid performance shoe. Even those who may not like the aesthetics of the original design have complimented its combination of lightweight feeling and sturdiness—a key in 2015 shoe designs. Curry in particular is sensitive to ankle issues, having nearly seen his career derailed over recurrent problems.

The Curry One isn't going to cause those issues. Mostly because Curry would never wear a shoe that doesn't feel safe. Having thrown a pair of the original releases on for an on-court test when I was buying kicks earlier this year, Under Armour did a nice job and passed with flying colors.

For those who like a more understated colorway, this may be your shoe.
