Coco Gauff Smashes Racket in Viral Video After Loss to Svitolina in Australian Open Women's Bracket
Third-seeded Coco Gauff fell to No. 12 Elina Svitolina 6-1, 6-2, in the quarterfinals of the 2026 Australian Open on Tuesday morning.
Svitolina thoroughly dominated the 21-year-old Gauff, who has now fallen in the Aussie Open quarters in back-to-back years.
After Tuesday's lopsided loss, cameras captured Gauff smashing her racket in frustration while he was making her way back to the locker room:
Speaking to reporters after the match, Gauff discussed the incident and took umbrage with the fact that a private moment was broadcast to millions.
"Certain moments—the same thing happened to Aryna [Sabalenka] after I played her in the final of the U.S. Open—I feel like they don't need to broadcast," Gauff said. "I tried to go somewhere where I thought there wasn't a camera because I don't necessarily like breaking rackets.
"I broke one racket [at the] French Open, I think, and I said I would never do it again on court because I don't feel like that's a good representation. So, yeah, maybe some conversations can be had, because I feel like at this tournament the only private place we have is the locker room."
Joining Svitolina in the semifinals is world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, who made quick work of No. 29 Iva Jovic in a 6-3, 6-0, quarterfinal victory.
The rest of the semifinal field will be rounded out Tuesday night when No. 5 Elena Rybakina faces No. 2 Iga Świątek and No. 6 Jessica Pegula takes on No. 4 Amanda Anisimova.
Gauff was never truly in it on Tuesday, as the American got broken on serve four times in the first set alone.
Svitolina then raced out to a 3-0 lead in the second set thanks in part to another break, and Gauff was unable to recover from that deficit.
In total, Svitolina had 12 winners to Gauff's six, and Gauff had 26 unforced errors to Svitolina's 16. The hard-hitting Gauff also had five double faults and no aces.
With Tuesday's loss, Gauff's quest for a first career Australian Open title fell short once again.
In fact, the 2023 U.S. Open and 2025 French Open champion still has yet to even reach an Aussie Open final. Gauff's best performance in Melbourne remains a trip to the semifinals in 2024.
Entering the quarterfinals, there was a chance for three Americans to make it to at least the semis, but with Gauff and Jovic both out, the only American representation in the semifinals will be the winner of the all-American matchup between Pegula and Anisimova.
While Madison Keys is the reigning Australian Open champion, the chances of an American repeat will be down to one in four by the time the semifinals commence.
As for Svitolina, the 31-year-old Ukrainian is through to her fourth career Grand Slam semifinal, but she has yet to win a Grand Slam title or even reach a Grand Slam final.
In order to end that drought, Svitolina will have to beat top-seeded Sabalenka, who is a two-time Australian Open champion and four-time Grand Slam champ overall.
