Mets Trade for Twins Infielder, What's Next for Steve Cohen's Squad amid Latest Spree?

Zach BacharJan 22, 2026

The Minnesota Twins traded infielder Vidal Bruján to the New York Mets in exchange for cash considerations, the team announced Thursday.

Bruján appeared in 60 combined games with the Atlanta Braves, Baltimore Orioles and Chicago Cubs during the 2025 season. The Twins claimed him off waivers on Jan. 14.

Mets owner Steve Cohen's squad has been active during the offseason as of late, trading for center fielder Luis Robert Jr. on Tuesday before acquiring star pitcher Freddy Peralta in a separate swap with the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday.

New York also made a splash in free agency on Friday, signing infielder Bo Bichette to a three-year contract worth $126 million.

As for Bruján, he's spent five seasons in the majors and opened his MLB tenure with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021.

He's a career .199 hitter with five home runs, 16 stolen bases and 48 RBI under his belt.

During the 2025 season, Bruján recorded five doubles and eight RBI to go along with a .253/.305/.310 slash line.

His versatility should make him an intriguing depth piece for the Mets. Last year, Bruján played every defensive position other than catcher and first base.

The 27-year-old will earn $850,000 if he's on an MLB roster next season and receive $500,000 if he's in the minor leagues (via Spotrac).

The Mets could remain active despite their recent flurry of moves, with Jon Heyman of the New York Post listing them among the teams in contact with free-agent outfielder Austin Hays on Tuesday. The bullpen could also use some help after losing some key players in free agency, including Edwin Diaz.

New York is attempting to rebound from a 2025 campaign in which the team narrowly failed to secure a postseason spot, finishing with an 83-79 record.
