John Harbaugh Rumors Uncover Demands in Giants Contract Negotiations
A clandestine meeting between John Harbaugh and New York Giants executive Chris Mara helped to seal his hiring as head coach, according to The Athletic's Ian O'Connor.
"To ease the coach's concerns about the chain of command and operational structure, Chris Mara had secretly met with him on Friday at an undisclosed location between New York and Baltimore," O'Connor reported Monday.
Per the report, Harbaugh "needed it in writing" that he wouldn't have to report directly to general manager Joe Schoen. He was "was pushing ownership to change to more of a coach-driven model" rather than one where the GM calls most of the shots.

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
Minimizing Schoen's role in football decisions is something a lot of fans will likely welcome. He has been the general manager since 2022, and New York has had one winning season over that period.
In general, the Giants are no closer to contending for a Super Bowl than they were when Schoen arrived.
The way the organization is now structured doesn't preclude Harbaugh and Schoen from having a collaborative relationship, either. Baltimore Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta got plenty of credit over the years for their player development and successful transactions.
Working aggressively to land Harbaugh looks more shrewd in retrospect, too. The Buffalo Bills job just became available, and that's arguably a more attractive vacancy.
Empowering Harbaugh to the degree he sought does risk backfiring, though.
This is a head coach who turns 64 this year and has four playoff wins since 2012. If his career is entering a decline phase, letting him influence more of the Giants' operations will have far-reaching consequences that impact the next regime.
Regardless of who they hired, it was still time for the Giants to change the way they operated.
The Mara family is the one common denominator in New York since Bill Parcells stepped down as head coach in 1991. Two Super Bowl wins followed his departure, but the year-to-year consistency has been lacking, particularly over the past decade.
Team officials needed to reshape their thinking in order to adapt with the times.
