Fresh NBA Rumors on Jonathan Kuminga, Michael Porter Jr., Lakers, Warriors, Potential 3-Team Trade
The Golden State Warriors reportedly reached an impasse with the Sacramento Kings in trade discussions involving forward Jonathan Kuminga, but it sounds like more teams could be added to the mix to make the deal happen.
According to The Athletic's Marcus Thompson II, Sam Amick and Nick Friedell, sources in both Golden State and Sacramento "acknowledge that a three-team deal is most likely if Kuminga is going to wind up with the Kings." It was also noted that the Warriors "have been tied to the Brooklyn Nets' Michael Porter Jr., with the prospect of him coming Golden State's way in that sort of three-team structure." League and team sources also reportedly confirmed that the Los Angeles Lakers "have some interest" in Kuminga.
Kuminga has completely fallen out of Golden State's rotation and hasn't played since Dec. 18. He's made 18 appearances this season with 13 starts, averaging 11.8 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.6 assists.
Despite the Warriors appearing to give up on Kuminga, that doesn't mean they're willing to ship him away for nothing. Thompson, Amick and Friedell reported that while the Kings "still have significant interest" in Kuminga, their offer of veteran guard Malik Monk and a 2030 first-round pick (top-12 protected) is no longer on the table, as Golden State isn't interested in Monk and Sacramento isn't willing to part ways with the draft pick anymore.
It was also noted that the Warriors "are now taking a harder stance than before in regards to the insistence that they don't absorb contracts that extend beyond this season," creating uncertainty over whether Kuminga will be moved at all before the Feb. 5 trade deadline. Despite Golden State's reported interest in Porter, a team source "insisted earlier this week that there had not been substantive talks" with Brooklyn. The team is also "aware of the intrigue" from Los Angeles and "waiting to see how that situation evolves."
If Kuminga remains with the Warriors past the trade deadline, a Golden State player said, "then he has to play." Another player added, "I could actually see that happening."
The 23-year-old reportedly "is still well-liked in the locker room, where there is a shared hope that he flourishes wherever he lands next." While his Warriors teammates would welcome him back to the court, there's reportedly "an understanding that Kuminga believes he can still be a star, but he'll never get the opportunity he's seeking within the framework of the Warriors' hierarchy."
