After signing a deal with the Chicago Cubs in free agency, Alex Bregman penned his farewell to the Boston Red Sox.
The third baseman said it was "an honor" to play in Boston.
"It was an honor to play for a city that shares the same passion and love for the game as I do," Bregman wrote. "You welcomed my family with open arms and we will always be grateful for the support you gave us."

Bregman spent one season with the Red Sox before signing a five-year, $175 million contract with the Cubs last week. The deal includes a full no-trade clause and doesn't have any opt-out clauses.
Before joining the Red Sox, Bregman spent nine seasons with the Houston Astros, where he won a pair of World Series in 2017 and 2022. After the 2024 campaign, Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million contract with the Boston Red Sox.
The deal included opt-out options after the 2025 and 2026 seasons, and he ultimately decided he wanted out after one year. He technically could have made more money per year on the Red Sox deal, but he now has more long-term security in Chicago.
According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Red Sox offered Bregman $165 million over five years, an offer they believed would bring him back to Boston.
Bregman had a strong first season in Boston, collecting 18 home runs, 62 RBI and a .273 batting average, earning his third All-Star nod. He unfortunately missed time due to injury and played just 114 games.
The Cubs posted their best record since 2018, going 92-70, reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2020. Chicago also made a run to the NLDS for the first time since 2017.
After a strong year, the Cubs have landed one of the best players on the free agent market, so expectations will be high in 2026.
