Matt LaFleur, Packers Reportedly Agree to Multiyear Contract Extension After Hot-Seat Rumors
Matt LaFleur isn't going anywhere.
The Green Bay Packers agreed to a new multiyear contract extension with their head coach on Saturday, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. General manager Brian Gutekunst is also getting an extension, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
LaFleur's status with the Packers was thrown into the spotlight following his team's 31-27 loss to the Chicago Bears in the NFC Wild Card Round. Green Bay was in full control with a 21-3 halftime lead and 21-6 advantage through three quarters and then gave up 25 points in the fourth quarter.
It wasn't the statement LaFleur wanted to make with his contract set to expire after the 2026 season, but the Packers decided to bring him back even after the collapse.
ESPN's Rob Demovsky reported following the loss that "a speedy resolution and a public announcement" was expected as the team decided whether to give LaFleur an extension, fire him, mutually part ways or even trade him.
ESPN's Adam Schefter also highlighted John Harbaugh's connection with the Packers and added, "A lot of people around the league have been wondering if the Packers decide to go in a different direction, if all of a sudden the Green Bay Packers might vault to the top of John Harbaugh's list as the top available choice for him."
Alas, LaFleur will remain the head coach as he looks to build on what is already a resume of consistency.
Green Bay has made the playoffs in six of his seven seasons and is 76-40-1 during his tenure. Its worst season during that span was an 8-9 record, and he also has four double-digit-win campaigns.
His offensive background has also shone through with Aaron Rodgers winning back-to-back MVPs under LaFleur and Jordan Love developing into a quarterback who threw for more than 4,000 yards during his first year as full-time starter in 2023.
Yet the Packers are also a proud and historical franchise that expects to compete for a Super Bowl every season.
That they haven't won the NFC North since the 2021 campaign and haven't been past the Divisional Round since the 2020 season surely doesn't sit well with the front office and many fans.
The latest early playoff exit was maybe the most shocking, as the Packers couldn't protect a commanding lead against their archrivals in the Bears.
But now LaFleur won't have to worry about his job status as he prepares his team to bounce back in 2026 and beyond.
