How John Harbaugh Could Impact Matt LaFleur's Packers Future Explained by Adam Schefter

Scott PolacekJan 11, 2026

Whether Saturday's playoff loss to the Chicago Bears was the final game of Matt LaFleur's tenure as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers reportedly could depend on John Harbaugh.

ESPN's Adam Schefter explained the situation Sunday, highlighting Harbaugh's connection to the Packers as someone with "deep midwestern roots and ties." Harbaugh's agent is Bryan Harlan, who just so happens to be the son of former Packers team president Bob Harlan.

"A lot of people around the league have been wondering if the Packers decide to go in a different direction, if all of a sudden the Green Bay Packers might vault to the top of John Harbaugh's list as the top available choice for him," Schefter said.

Hiring Harbaugh would mean moving on from LaFleur ahead of the 2026 campaign, which is scheduled to be the final one on his current contract.

ESPN's Rob Demovsky reported "a speedy resolution and a public announcement" is expected regardless of what Green Bay decides. He also outlined the number of options the NFC North team faces, including signing its head coach to a long-term extension, agreeing to a shorter extension to avoid lame-duck status, firing him outright or even trading him.

A trade could help it get a first-round pick back after it traded two to acquire Micah Parsons from the Dallas Cowboys before the 2025 season.

But Harbaugh is another variable in the situation, and a notable one at that considering he is considered one of the best coaches in the NFL.

Harbaugh made the playoffs in 12 of his 18 seasons as the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens, including when he won the Super Bowl during the 2012 campaign. That type of consistency in an NFL that is often defined by parity is impressive, even if the team hasn't returned to the Super Bowl since winning that Lombardi Trophy.

Yet LaFleur has also been similarly consistent, as the Packers have made the playoffs in six of his seven seasons. They reached back-to-back NFC Championship Games in his first two years, although they have never made the Super Bowl under LaFleur.

Demovsky noted Packers president Ed Policy previously said he does not like coaches coaching on the final year of their deals in lame-duck status, so LaFleur simply finishing the terms of his current deal on the sidelines in 2026 seems like one of the least likely options.

But the eyes of the NFL will be on the Packers since Harbaugh is such a highly coveted coach who has generated interest from a number of teams with openings. LaFleur would also instantly become one of the most highly coveted candidates if the NFC North team moves on from him.

Which may just happen as part of coinciding moves with Harbaugh.
