Dennis Schroder Suspended by NBA After Reported Confrontation with Lakers' Luka Doncic After Loss

Julia StumbaughJan 10, 2026

Sacramento Kings guard Dennis Schröder has been issued a three-game suspension "for confronting and attempting to strike another player" after a Dec. 28 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, the NBA announced Saturday.

NBA insider Chris Haynes reported that Laker star Luka Dončić was the other player involved in the confrontation.

The incident took place in a hallway at Crypto.com Arena about 40 minutes after the game was over, according to the NBA.

Anthony Slater of ESPN provided more details on the incident:

"Forty minutes after the buzzer, Schroder went after Doncic, telling Doncic that he can't call him a 'b----' on the court and pretend everything is fine off the court. The NBA ruled that Schroder attempted to strike Doncic.

"Lakers center Deandre Ayton tried to drag away Schroder from the confrontation while a stunned Doncic attempted to exit as security intervened.

"Schroder was eventually escorted to the team bus as Kings coach Doug Christie and several teammates sought answers about the sudden drama."

The NBA stated that Schröder "sought out the player" and "initiated the confrontation."

Schröder is now set to miss three home games, including a rematch with the Lakers on Monday. The suspension will cost him $291,807 in lost salary, per ESPN's Bobby Marks.

The Kings and Lakers are set to meet one more time this season during a March 1 matchup back at Crypto.com Arena.

The Lakers won the Dec. 28 matchup 125-101 as Dončić and LeBron James combined for a total of 68 points.

Schröder, who contributed 11 points in 19 minutes off the bench, visibly clashed with Dončić multiple times during the game.

One clip that went viral after the game showed Dončić telling Schröder he "should've signed" with the Lakers when the franchise reportedly offered him a four-year extension in 2021.

Schröder is currently playing in the first year of a three-year, $44.4 million he inked as part of a sign-and-trade with the Kings last summer.

He is averaging 13 points, 5.7 assists and 3.3 rebounds while mostly coming off the bench through his first 31 games with the Kings this season.

The Kings, who are sitting at the bottom of the Western Conference following an 8-30 start to the season, will now be without Schröder for Sunday's game against the Houston Rockets, Sunday's matchup with the Lakers and Wednesday's contest against the New York Knicks.

Schröder will be eligible to return for Friday's home game against the Washington Wizards.
