Jim Harbaugh Reacts to Brother John's Firing by Ravens amid Giants, NFL Rumors

Andrew PetersJan 7, 2026

John Harbaugh is out of work after being fired by the Baltimore Ravens, but his brother is confident he will be back on a sideline soon.

When asked about bringing his brother on staff, Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters, "he'll be a head coach next year."

Jim Harbaugh also may be in need of a new defensive coordinator soon, as he noted that current defensive coordinator Jesse Minter has had "several teams" reach out about an interview.

"Check every box," Harbaugh said when asked about Minter as a head coaching candidate. "You got a box to check, check it with Jesse."

John Harbaugh was the Ravens' head coach for 18 seasons, compiling a 180-113 record and leading the team to a Super Bowl victory in 2012. Baltimore fired him on Tuesday after the Ravens went 8-9 and failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2020.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that John Harbaugh's firing came after owner Steve Bisciotti grew "frustrated" with the lack of playoff success over the past few seasons. The Athletic's Dianna Russini added that his "refusal to entertain any conversations about potentially moving on from offensive coordinator Todd Monken" was a "pressure point" in the decision.

While John Harbaugh's final campaign with the Ravens was far from his best, that hasn't deterred teams from trying to get him on their sideline. Less than an hour after John Harbaugh was fired, his agent told ESPN's Adam Schefter that he had received calls from seven NFL teams. There are currently just seven head coaching vacancies in the NFL, including the Ravens.

Schefter also reported that John Harbaugh is "expected to emerge as a favorite" in the New York Giants' head coaching search. NFL insider Josina Anderson noted Wednesday that the Miami Dolphins "have been in touch on" Harbaugh, though they have not yet fired head coach Mike McDaniel.
