Russell Wilson Reveals Hiding Torn Hamstring from Giants and Played Through Injury
New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson revealed that he suffered a torn hamstring prior to a Week 2 clash with the Dallas Cowboys, but hid the injury from New York's coaching staff and played through it.
"You know, I played that [Week 2] game, you know, I tore my hamstring on Friday in practice — the last play of practice," Wilson told reporters Monday, via Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. "And I had a grade two [tear]. I couldn't tell anybody. I had to go and play on it just because I knew the circumstance, I had to play on it, no matter what. I actually ended up going to the Dallas Mavericks' facility, training."
"And, you know, kept it quiet, just trying to get treatment on it and just knowing that I probably couldn't run from the goal line to the 10-yard line if I wanted to, but I feel like, you know, I got to play this game," he added.
Wilson was on the field for 95.5 percent of the Giants' offensive snaps during their 40-37 overtime loss to the Cowboys in Week 2 (h/t Pro Football Reference).
He finished 30-of-41 for 450 yards and three touchdowns compared to one interception. Wilson also rushed for 28 yards on three attempts.
Since he didn't reveal the hamstring issue to the Giants, he wasn't on their Week 2 injury report. At the time, Wilson's status as New York's starting quarterback was uncertain with rookie Jaxson Dart waiting behind him.
While Wilson playing through the injury and nearly pulling off an overtime victory is admirable, the NFL could investigate the situation.
In the 2023 season, the league fined the Arizona Cardinals $75,000 for failing to disclose an injury to running back Bijan Robinson prior to a Week 7 matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
As for Wilson, he started one more game against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 3 before he was benched in favor of Dart.
Dart ended his inaugural season by completing 63.7 percent of his throws for 2,272 yards and 15 touchdowns compared to five interceptions in 12 starts. He also found the end zone nine times on the ground.
Wilson will now prepare to hit free agency, although retirement doesn't appear to be an option for the 37-year-old.
