Deron Rippey Jr. Commits to Duke, Full Scouting Report on 5-Star PG Prospect

The best point guard in the 2026 men's basketball recruiting class is going to Duke.

Deron Rippey Jr. chose the Blue Devils on Tuesday from a list of five finalists that included Duke, North Carolina State, Miami, Tennessee and Texas.

According to 247Sports' composite rankings, Rippey is a 5-star prospect and the No. 12 overall player, No. 1 point guard and No. 1 player in the state of New Jersey in his class. He is the type of game-changing prospect who will surely see playing time right away at the collegiate level, which makes this a major win for his new school on the trail.

The crystal-ball prediction on 247Sports going into Tuesday's decision was for Duke.

"Duke is great, man," Rippey said during a previous interview with Rivals' Jamie Shaw (h/t Joe Tipton of On 3). "Jon Scheyer just got his extension. They had five NBA draft picks last year, so that's obviously eye-opening and eye-catching for me. You know, being able to go there and potentially have a chance to follow in the footsteps of some of those people that got drafted."

However, some of the nation's best programs beyond just Duke were pursuing him throughout the recruiting process, and for good reason.

Ross Martin of 247Sports highlighted Rippey's potential as "an explosively athletic lead guard" who is capable of dominating on the defensive side with his ability to pressure the ball all over the court and disrupt offensive sets.

That same athleticism allows him to attack the rim off the bounce and either score himself or set up teammates when defenders collapse.

"Offensively, Rippey is a dynamic athlete with the ball, both in terms of his burst into the lane and ability to rise up for explosive dunks," Martin wrote. "That explosiveness allows him to make momentum-changing plays at virtually any point and also consistently pressure the rim."

While Rippey could improve his shot selection and outside shooting, Martin also highlighted the "significant strides" he has made in that area.

Joining a top program such as Duke should allow him to continue making those strides, especially if he is playing with high-level teammates who can attract some of the attention from defenses and create lanes to create for the point guard.

Rippey has NBA potential, and he will look to live up to it at the next level after making his highly anticipated college decision Tuesday.
