Trey McBride Makes NFL History, Breaks Record for Most Catches By TE in Single Season
Trey McBride is making history.
The Arizona Cardinals tight end set the NFL record for catches in a single season on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals, reeling in his 117th reception for the campaign.
That broke the previous record by Zach Ertz in 2018.
McBride had a monster game during Sunday's 37-14 loss, catching 10 passes for 76 yards and a touchdown. It was his fourth game this season with double-digit catches, and he's now up to 11 touchdowns on the campaign.
McBride has emerged as the NFL's top tight end, with at least 110 catches and 1,100 receiving yards in back-to-back seasons. In a lost season for the 3-13 Cardinals, he's been one of the few positive stories.
It's perhaps not surprising that McBride not only broke the record this week, but did so amidst a huge game. The star tight end was frustrated with himself last week after not only being held to four receptions for 27 yards, but also having a potential touchdown reception dislodged by an Atlanta Falcons defender during the 26-19 loss.
"No grace at all," McBride told reporters when asked if he was taking it easy on himself after the drop given the big hit. "I've got to make the play. I was gonna get drilled whether I caught it or I dropped it."
"I was frustrated," he added. "I was mad at myself more than anything. It was nothing they did or what Jacoby [Brissett] did, nothing like that. I was mad at myself for a few plays I left out there, that end zone play in particular. I feel like I've caught much harder balls than that. Then they come back to me on the next play and I get broken up... that's another play I've made a million times."
On Sunday, he made plenty of plays for the Cardinals. Few of his teammates followed suit, however, a theme for the Cardinals in 2025.
