Russell Westbrook Praised by Kings GM After Criticism from Contract in NBA Free Agency
The Sacramento Kings received a bit of criticism after signing Russell Westbrook in free agency, but general manager Scott Perry said the veteran has been a "great addition" for everyone in the building.
Perry praised Westbrook's competitiveness and leadership on the Hoop Genius podcast.
"Oh, I think it's really been a great addition—not only for the basketball players, the team, and the coaches, but for me too, personally," Perry said (31:59 mark). "Just being around someone who is so competitive each and every day. The guy is here because he just loves to compete and play basketball. You know, it's not about money or anything anymore—it's just about competition for him. So it was important for us, to your point—regardless of his age—it was important to have an example like that in the building, especially for your younger players. And Russ has poured into them."

Free Agents Likely to Get Overpaid 💰
Westbrook, who joined the Kings on a veteran minimum contract in October, is no longer the triple-double machine and MVP candidate he once was, but the 37-year-old has been solid, putting up 14.4 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.9 rebounds per game.
His play hasn't been enough to help the Kings, who are 7-23, and the team reportedly is looking into trading its veterans. Perry clearly thinks highly of Westbrook, though, so perhaps he'll stick around after the trade deadline.
