Willson Contreras Reportedly Traded to Red Sox, Boston's Updated Lineup and Payroll

Andrew PetersDec 21, 2025

The Boston Red Sox are looking to put together a championship-caliber roster in 2026, and they made a big step toward that goal on Sunday.

Per ESPN's Jeff Passan, the Red Sox are acquiring first baseman Willson Contreras in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals. According to Passan, the Red Sox are sending pitcher Hunter Dobbins and some minor league arms to the Cardinals.

Katie Woo of The Athletic noted that the trade will impact Contreras' contract:

Contreras is entering the third year of a five-year, $87.5 million contract and is owed $18 million in 2026.

With Contreras on his way to Boston, here's a look at the Red Sox's updated lineup.

2026 Boston Red Sox Lineup

1. Roman Anthony, LF
2. Alex Bregman, 3B
3. Masataka Yoshida, DH
4. Willson Contreras, 1B
5. Trevor Story, SS
6. Wilyer Abreu, RF
7. Marcelo Mayer/Kristian Campbell, 2B
8. Carlos Narvaez, C
9. Ceddanne Rafaela, CF

The trade marks the second time this offseason the Red Sox have done business with the Cardinals. In November, Boston acquired starting pitcher Sonny Gray from St. Louis.

Contreras, 33, is coming off a solid season, hitting 20 home runs and a career-high 80 RBI while slashing .257/.344/.447. While it was a good season for the veteran, he also dealt with some injuries, including a shoulder strain that ended his season in mid-September.

Contreras, a three-time All-Star, spent the first seven years of his career with the Chicago Cubs before signing with the Cardinals ahead of the 2023 season.

Contreras had a no-trade clause in his deal, and he was unwilling to waive it last year as the Cardinals looked to rebuild. Toward the end of last season, however, he indicated that he'd be more open to a trade, though his first choice would have been to stay.

"I'm a guy that always believes in my intuition and feeling," Contreras told reporters in September. "If something comes up to [president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom] that makes a lot of sense for him and the organization, and it makes sense for me and my future, how about we talk about that? But as of right now, I would just like to be part of the process."

The Red Sox went 89-73 last season and reached the postseason for the first time since 2021, though they were eliminated by the New York Yankees in the wild-card round.

Boston is clearly set on competing for a championship now, and Contreras will look to aid the Red Sox in that quest.
